Completely New here - Advice

Welcome to BHW
First off, there is tons of information on SEO here. You are going to need to take some time and scourer the forum and learn. No one is going to hold you by the hand. Take the time to search, yes, use the search function, it works pretty darn good. Read, read, and then read some more.
Been designing websites and E-Commerce sites for 14 years, learned a TON of stuff here. Spent a good 6 months reading before I was confidant enough to sell what I learned. What I have learned here has put a few bucks in my pocket.
Go forth and perv the threads.

Look at your competition. Identify what kind of link profile they have so that you can get an idea of what kind of offsite SEO you need to do. Make sure your onsite SEO is solid too.
Like EagleRose said - search the forum. Just don't absorb too much though otherwise you'll suffer from information overload. I did, might not happen to you.
Take action - build, track, optimize. Find what works for you and scale that shit!

Second that. I learn theory here. I learn my "Practical Application" by looking at the competitions backlinks & backlink structure.

Listen to all the aforementioned posts...that is the best advice out there. Glad to see also that you have something going already...this is the toughest step that people are often reluctant to take as they fear failure. Remember, you'll never know where you stand in life if you keep sitting!
I'd like to add a few other suggestions:
You mentioned that you have an affiliate site. This would probably benefit from getting as much targeted traffic as possible so you really need to analyze the niche that it is in and all your competition. It is difficult to make any affiliate commissions if you don't get any traffic.
However, you can search the forums to find techniques to convert even with low traffic or even virtually no traffic at all. Much of this will rely on you being somewhat of an authority in the niche...just helps in your conversion on each sale when you can get them to the sale page.
Other methods you may be interested in for affiliate marketing and where I personally make a killing is through e-mail capture of my targeted traffic. If you can get someone to opt-in to an offer (some freebie - either info or product), then you can send countless offers directed at that audience for days, weeks, months, and even years.
Keep reading, learning, and test, test, test! It's an exciting journey ahead!

go to the download section and have a look around. you can spend days in that section like i did when i was new
Many people would advise you to read through this forums first but I personally feel that you can read good blogs to understand more about internet marketing and making money online. Some of the good bloggers are viperchill, smart passive income and youngprepro. I would always visit those blogs to read their content since it is really good.

If you want a easy to understand guide to get your started I suggest you check out seomoz, I think you can register for free and they have a 10 chapter guide (pretty short) that will give you the rundown on what SEO is, and how it helps your sites.
I recommend you start there to get somewhat of a grasp and then come back and start reading the threads on this forum. takes some time but eventually all these alien term will start sounding familiar.

You have an affiliate site, but cannot name one "term"? Sounds flaky. Are you flaky?
One component of SEO is the precise use of written language. You can't optimize for an approximation of your kw. You either nail it on a character-by-character basis, or you fail. Do, or not-do. There is no try.
Personally I expect a similar lack of ambiguity in other forms of text communication. You start the thread like you might know something, then later on it sounds like you know nothing at all. You cannot name one "term". You don't know what a "backlink" is, but you have some kind of affiliate site?
Sounds flaky.
The ability to achieve the level of precision required for optimizing for keywords is the same as the ability to communicate clearly via text. I have misgivings whenever I happen upon someone that claims to have an interest or some ability in SEO, but fails to string enough words together to convey an idea accurately.
On another thread, there's some guy claiming to sell SEO services, but his own site doesn't have a site map. And when he was given this bit of information, he wasn't smart enough to be embarrassed or even say thank you. So that's what the guy standing next to you looks like, and I look for differences and similarities. I assume other people also think this way.

My other email broke down so I cannot post as "Grimbo" anymore so here I am. To respond to Nigel, any idiot can make a site and join an affiliate program, it is not that hard. I put a site up, but I am attempting to learn how to improve my skills.
