Complete beginner to crypto, where do I even start?

Hi everyone,

So... I am brand new to cryptocurrency and I mean BRAND NEW. I have absolutely zero knowledge, no coins, no wallet, and no idea what is good advice versus noise.

I am not looking to get rich overnight or chase hype. I just want to understand the basics properly and avoid beginner mistakes.

SO I was wondering, if any of you had suggestions on beginner friendly platforms, resources, or tips you wish you had when you started?

I am happy to take this slow and do it the right way. Any guidance, links, or personal experiences would be massively appreciated.

Also if there is another thread on here I may have missed which would be a good place to start, feel free to share

crypto futures
memecoins
gambling
or scamming

Keep it simple and don’t dabble in low cap coins. You’ll be chasing hype endlessly only to be shilled mostly rugs.

Watch out for rug pulls, and hype spammers for low value coins. I recommend just DCA investing in 5 big coins. Such as BTC, ETH

Would recemond First Investing into Some Good Trustable Coins Such as BTC or Solona

Other than that, Said Just wanted to let you know. Please don't chase hypes, as this types of coins skyrocket one Day and just Get dupped.

huge respect for how you’re approaching this. Wanting to learn slowly and avoid hype is exactly the right mindset. Most people lose money in crypto because they rush in without understanding the basics.

First, learn the basic concepts of crypto, then start trading to gain more experience.

Where someone creates a meme coin but they have a hidden system to generate 10000000s of tokens and when its at a satisfactory level/value/cap they will generate tons of coins for themselves and spam sell it on any exchange available cashing out 5000$-50,000$ and droping the price to nothing (0.001$) and thus "pulling the carpet" out of the legit investors.

Start slow and learn basics first (Coinbase Learn, Binance Academy, Investopedia). Use a major exchange in your country, buy a tiny amount, turn on 2FA, ignore DMs. Don’t chase hype, and always do a small test transfer before moving bigger amounts.
 
If I had to give beginner advice, I’d say start simple and don’t rush. You don’t need to touch DeFi, leverage, or altcoins right away. Focus on understanding how Bitcoin and Ethereum work, what a wallet is, and how exchanges function.

A beginner friendly approach is:
  • Use a reputable exchange to learn the basics of buying and selling.
  • Learn the difference between custodial vs non-custodial wallets before moving funds around.
  • Start with very small amounts so mistakes don’t cost you much.

Biggest mistakes I made early on were overtrading, following hype on social media, and not understanding fees or security properly. Take time to learn about private keys, scams, and basic market cycles.

There are a lot of noisy resources out there, so try to stick to educational content rather than “price prediction” channels. Reading old forum threads and beginner guides helped me way more than Twitter ever did.
Taking it slow is honestly the smartest move you can make in crypto.

Learn the basic knowledge about cryptocurrencies, how to read candlesticks, how to analyze technical indicators, master capital management, and then start trading.
 
Well, my journey is off to a start. I signed up to coinbase and deposited my first amount and now have bitcoin. I feel that by "doing" something, I will learn the most. Start small and see how we go.
 
The only way to avoid risk is to invest long term and dont use leverage
 
Start with Coinbase or Kraken for a user-friendly and highly secure experience. Stick to Bitcoin and Ethereum first while you're still learning the ropes.
 
What I can tell you is that you shouldn’t do it. However, if you still want to try, make sure you research it very carefully or start by investing a small amount of capital to test first. Don’t be too greedy—cryptocurrency is similar to forex; it can wipe out all of your money within just a few minutes.

I signed up to Coinbase... have purchased some Bitcoin. However I'm paying fees per transaction (newbie error). Would you recommend joining Coinbase One (for zero trading fees)? Would you say it's worth it in the long run?
