Competitors competing with themselves?!

How common is it too see your competitors create additional sites and then directly competing with themselves in the same small niche? I hadn't known this was a thing until I was doing some research just now. They've also used the smaller site to link back to their higher performing site. Given this, they've completely dominated this niche.

It's way too common especially when you're into high competition keywords. They usually built parasites or buffer sites with powerup links to compete with their own moneysite. Why bother to rank only one site when you can rank multiple sites? ;)

Looking further, all the links they have are pretty shocking.
 
Actually, if you look at it better, it makes a lot of sense.

Imagine this. You have a website with 400 articles. You get around 3,000 impressions a day and 30-60 clicks. There will be a lot of contextual keywords you are not ranking high enough for. You already have your article. You can just redo another article targeting those small keywords and rank for those instead. You might call it KGR if you will.

Then you interlink and pass more authority to the bigger website. Scaling this will give the possibility of focusing on high-difficulty keywords on the bigger website.

That definetly makes sense, yeah.
 
it's profitable and scalable and they know that already as they did rank,
it's a simple opportunity that's taken in many niches, especially the competitive and profitable ones,
and even further, you get more high authority websites to push the main one, reserving the 1st spot as long as you're ranking the others

There isn't even any competition though. It's them with DR around 20, their other site pushing them links with the same articles and that's literally it. Deciding on if that's an opportunity or not.

logically, it should be, otherwise, they're just throwing their money away,
it could be a pbn as well, I have a couple of pbns outranking my main websites for the specific keywords targetted,
just check how they're monetizing these blogs and assume how much you need to invest and to earn, you'll get the idea by this part

High commision affiliate. Ahrefs put them above 10k/month. Logically, I might not outrank them but would be easy in to hit top 5 in the serps, hopefully.

I understand that your post pertains to SEO. Similarly, in SEM (like Google Ads), sometimes we can dominate a keyword in a geo by having multiple (different) websites ads running in multiple Google Ads accounts, all at the same time.

This ^, as it's better you having 3 sites on page 1 then just a single site.
If one gets dropped, then you still have 2 there.

It costs thrice as much though. If ranking one site is already a pain, now imagine three.

One keyword research, 1 article content brief, then work accordingly from that.
It may cost thrice as much, but if you are able to get the top 3 spots, you're getting 95% of the traffic.

GO BIG OR GO HOME :)
 
I always do the same with ecommerce sites, create your own competition is a very good strategy to stay on top of the serps.

Each site should slightly be targeting different demographics/brand style/product pricing, and you will find that some people simply won't buy from your site 1 or 2 cause they didn't like your logo.

If a customer has a bad experience with site 1, they likely move to try site 2 or 3, you never end up losing customers and get a chance to retain them.
 
It has been a practice since quite some time, but it generally works in the micro niche.
