How effective is analysing competitor's backlinks and attempting to replicate them?

Would this help a website outrank their competitors?

Or is this a pointless task?

Its an important part of competition analysis, even before you decide to go with a keyword.

Do you really need an answer for that?

You're asking if it's a good idea to try and get the same links your competitor does in an effort to outrank them.

True if I think about it now.

However, it may have been the case that efforts may be spent getting better quality backlinks in compairision to competitor's websites.

It's good to replicate some of your competitor's backlinks, however not all of them are worth it and not all of them are doable. Still, it's a good practice.
