When a page is ranked in Google, should I be looking at the backlink count of
the actual page that is ranked, or the backlink count at the domain level?
I have competition that is ranking for inner pages. Basically, all of the top
listings are inner pages, but those inner pages have a very low backlink
count of less than 100, there are even some with less than 5 links counted.
At the domain level, they have many more links pointing to them though.

Domain authority always aid the inner page ranking. I would say look at both with more emphasis on the actual page ranking.

Exactly - if you look just of the page you will going to miss that internal link power that influences rankings, trust-ability of the site and it's authority in general

Look both domain level and the internal page, mainly you get alot of link juices flowing from domain level to internal pages.

I believe more importance should be ascribed to the domain authority rather than the authority of the ranking page. I build and monetise mostly Amazon affiliate sites. While searching for keywords to target, I see the kind of results described in the OP - low PA but high to very high DA. DA is more important now IMO.

Would be better to check the links of the entire domain, to know how much authority it really has.

Sometimes inner pages can rank, with really less link, only based on Domain's Authority & the link juice the homepage is passing to the inner page.

    Hey,

I might be wrong with this, but I'm looking at both and take the domain strength as leverage for the page. So, the higher the domain authority, the more power each link to the page will give. However, I don't have any data to really proof it... So, if someone thinks I'm wrong, please let me know. :)

    Warm regards,
    Neocortx

I think you are totally correct on this. Other-vice things would be just silly.

Ok. Thanks for all of the advice.

I'm trying to find mid-range keywords that would be easy to rank without a whole lot of effort. In this case,
the root domains for these rankings have anywhere from 4,000 to 40,000 backlinks.. but I've noticed that
most of the backlinks are coming from anywhere between 50-125 different domains. So, basically.. they
have some site-wide links coming in from multiple domains to bulk up the number of links flowing in.

Should I be focusing more on the number of domains linking into their sites, or the overall number of links?
In the example that I mentioned, I have a EMD site that is ranking #17 for the keyword and it has 80 links
that are coming in from 3 domains. I believe those are forum signature links. I did no SEO for this site at all. This
leads me to believe that if I am ranking 17 and doing absolutely nothing, that I could probably rank for this keyword.

If all the pages ranking for this keyword are inner posts from top level domains, you're lucky. However, there's a caught, because if the websites have higher DA, it will help the inner pages rank, and these inner pages are counted as authorities in google.

You can try building a niche website around the keyword and get links from top level and higher DA sites.

You need to look at both, while page links would mostly be more important, domain links also contribute a lot.

yes of course you should consider both domain and internal page links.
