So my competitor has the following stats
DA 42
PA 20
TF 6
CF 37
MT 2
QB 7K

My stats
DA 17
PA 36
TF 35
CF 40
MT 4
QB 13K

But yet he keeps outrunning me the whole time in rankings. Does anyone have an idea.

Ranking is just not stats, lots of other stuff is involved and in any case he has higher DA. He may also be hiding PBN links

You have DA17 he has DA42. We cant summarize SEO with 1 metric, I know, but just right there his site is much stronger.
So I dont agree with the title of this thread.

I was told DR is more important then DA. So you would say increasing DA?

These are the plausible reasons;
- He has better/longer content.
- He has higher DA, which I have found to be almost the only useable metric out there.

Then I have been clearly looking at it wrong the whole time :l

I'm outranking competitors with 4 DA. Stats are important, but they're worth nothing. My 16 DA website is literally dying.

This makes it even harder. Because now I have nothing to compare both websites with. What would you say is key to a succesfull ranking then?

DA is still valid, but it can be manipulated. I'd say look at the backlinks, keywords and traffic on Ahrefs, and their content.
Not an expert here, though.

How does someone with higher DA than you have lower stats?

On surface level without going deeper into what kind of sites and content are linking to both sites, we can easily conclude he has a stronger domain than you do.
Of course, as explained countless times on the forum, SEO is much more complex than mere third party metrics.

Also never forget that PBN is a thing

Google also take into account Clickthrough rate, bounce rate to determine the rank of your website on SERP
