competitor doing a ddos attack on my website, any suggestions?

One of my competitors has been doing a ddos attack on my site for the past 2 weeks, he's managed to take it offline for a few hours at least 3 times. Its been confirmed that its denial of service by the hosting company.

My question is, for anyone who has experience with this, is there anything I can do to combat this that doesnt involve buying a $5000 server? Are there companies that can help to locate or prevent this?

And this being blackhatworld..once I find out which competitor it is, is there anything I can do send him a message to knock it off? Im open to all suggestions, if they're less than.. civil then feel free to PM me..

I would greatly appreciate any knowledgable persons advice on this subject.

If you know who it is, file a lawsuit against him. DDOS attacks are illegal as far as I know.
 
First buy a hardware firewall from Ebay (Netscreen 204-208 or Watchguard Firebox WITH SOFTWARE)

These are more than powerful enough to block a DDOS from an idiot. I don't know if they can handle an army of zombies.

If you can prove who the attacker is, INVOICE THEM for what it has cost you (like maybe $300 per minute or so of attack)

Then put the invoice out to a collection agency and watch them run.

file a lawsuit against him if you know who he really is... DDOS attacks are considered crime!
 
Contact the FBI, they take this stuff very seriously, and if you have an idea of who it might be give that to the FBI as well.

Seriously, it happened to some friends company and he got the FBI involved and got a personal contact if it ever happened again so that they could respond fast.
 
A lawsuit? C'mon guys, you don't sue for illegal things. You (or more likely your host) report it to the cops so the dude gets arrested. What I don't understand it what sort of host can't just start filtering/dropping packets when some of their equipment is being attacked? I mean this is something that has the potential to be harming every customer on that box or perhaps their entire network. And they are doing nothing to stop it??
 
omg you are so lucky. contact the fbi with ip logs etc and say you are losing hundreds of k's. in the off chance that they are found you will get lots of money.
 
If you know who made it , let's put an iframe of his site on your site and see he's ddosing himself lol
 
Thank you for all the input and suggestions. I have not yet pinpointed which competitor it is yet, though I have narrowed it down to 3. It began happened after I lowered the price of items on my website. They cannot compete so they're going the ddos route.

I don't think a lawsuit or the FBI is a realistic option, all 3 who I suspect of doing it are in overseas countries. Im speaking with my host now about options.

Any other suggestions are appreciated, especialy from anyone who has had any experience with ddos attacks..

Or redirect the traffic to a .gov or .mil address, They'll soon deal with it
 
well, maybe you should ddos the 3 of them and the one that is doing it should stop. i'm sure someone ddos's for hire. that's a dirty business, hard to track who's doing it. they probably have a botnet doing it so it would be impossible to track down. so i think your best defense is to do it to them.

or, report it to the hosting companies of all three of them and hopefully they see which one it is.

or, you can have someone xrumer the shit out of them and kill them in the serp's when they get sandboxed.
 
xrumer the competitor once you find who it is .. that shitty person deserves it
