Competitor backlinks all nofollow

I've just been trying to analyse the competition for one of my keywords, and noticed one of my cometitors has 75 backlinks that are all low pr and the majority are nofollow wordpress comments. This is a fairly competitive keyword of which my website seems to be stuck on page 6.

My question: I thought nofollow backlinks gave no advantage in serps, have I got this wrong, or is this guy doing something else that i'm not understanding?

BTW, don't know if this makes any difference, but I'm using scrapebox backlink checker to find all his backlinks.

The other thing is, they've got no real content. Just some information on the home page, and links that direct to amazon and wikipedia. Where as I am consistently adding new content to my site.

Should I just ignore this website and concentrate on the others, with the assumption that he won't be in that position for very long?

Rember that NF links do not provide link juce (PR) but do play some part in serp positions. I have had some good success in using SB to drop links on only high PR top level domains (TLD's). If you consider the profile link example as a good way to show this - it is widely known that creating a profile on a high PR TLD provides your link some great power from leeching off the TLD domain even though the page your link is on does not have any PR.

It could well be that your competitor has leveraged this - an easy way to find out is to use the domain PR checker in SB and look at his backlinks and understand what the root domain power actually is, not just the page PR.....

There are millions of pages out there with exceptional content that just will not be found without backlinks. In my mind backlinking accounts for around 70% of the calculation in terms of serp placement - just type in something.com and look at the site and then the backlinks - draw your own conclusions.....

I'd previously thought that nofollow links were pretty much worthless, and the only reason you'd use them was to mix in with ******** backlinks to make them look more natural.

Makes much more sense now.

Any link is a good link.

Remember, you want to be building a natural looking link profile. That means links from everywhere of all types!
