Analyzed a competitor's backlink profile. Expected to see hundreds of high-authority links.

Instead? Mostly mid-tier niche sites (DR 30-50) with actual traffic and relevance.

Meanwhile I've been chasing DR 70+ "authority" sites that have zero relevance to the niche.

Quality + relevance beats authority alone. Every time.

Changed my entire prospecting strategy based on this one realization.

What's the biggest thing you've learned from analyzing competitors?

experience is the best teacher but learning from your competitors is a close second It takes a lot of maturity to admit a strategy was wrong and pivot this is exactly how you grow in this game cheers for the transparency.

This is a massive realization. I used to chase those 'big name' DR70+ sites too, but I noticed the rankings didn't move nearly as much as when I got a DR35 link from a site that actually writes about my topic daily. Relevance is the ultimate multiplier, a mid-tier link in the right neighborhood is worth five high-authority links in the wrong one every single time.

Not only that, wait till you discover a few relevant links from websites in the Top 2-3 pages on Google, in your industry or direct keyword.

Getting backlinks from sites that rank for the same keyword always work. Authority is not the only factor here. People chase high authority sites based on 3rd party metrics without understanding niche relevance. I've seen even backlinks from 0 DR sites push rankings because of niche relevance.

One big lesson from competitor analysis is that relevance matters more than just high authority. Tools like Ahrefs often show that competitors rank with niche-relevant links, not just high DR ones. I learned to focus on sites that have real traffic and match the topic. This brings better results than chasing big but unrelated sites.

Yes relevance - that's also why getting your links from publishing guests posts on a niche related websites is a neat way to build your SEO profile.

As opposed to try to grab an elephant.

I’ve noticed something similar. It’s easy to focus too much on high DR numbers, but relevance and consistency seem to matter more in the long run.

In many cases, competitors win by having a more natural link profile and content that fits the niche better, even if the metrics don’t look impressive at first glance.

Shifting focus from just metrics to overall relevance and context usually makes the strategy much more effective.

I also saw same thing, most competitors use mid DR niche relevant links instead of only high authority sites. Now I also focus more on relevance and real traffic sites, it works better than just chasing DR 70 plus links.

did you notice any difference in the type of content on those mid-tier niche sites compared to the higher authority ones you were targeting before

Seen a lot of sites with good volume but low intent or bad GEOs, so it doesn’t convert. Made me focus way more on quality over volume.

Same happened to me, after checking competitors I realized I was focusing on wrong things and once I adjusted strategy results improved.

I saw that most competitors don’t care about very high DR links, they focus more on links from related sites where real users exist, and that seems to help them rank more steadily.
