Competitive niches and KW research?

I have been reading about KW research. I am somewhat new, so I am supposed to pursue easy niches or easy keywords. I am seeing it both ways.

Is it alright to pursue low competition keywords in a high competition niche?

I bought Long Tail Pro to help me analyze the competitiveness of keywords. If it says the KW is low or even in the lower medium competition area could I possibly rank for it even if it is in a high competition niche?

I am just trying to figure out if I am wasting my time or not.

Easy competition keywords will be easy to rank no matter what niche it is. However if the niche is high competition then most if not all of the keywords will have higher competition due to the niche being profitable and therefore many people going for it.

High competition niches are difficult to rank as most if not all keywords would be quite a challenge.

You'd be better off using Reddit for keyword ideas instead of 'keyword tools'

You can do quite well targeting low competition keywords in highly competitive niches IF the keywords have a high BUYER INTENT
