Hi all,

I am coming across some keywords and the top 10 is full of authority sites such as ebay, wikipedia etc. but there are pretty much now backlinks to those specific urls.

Should I give it a shot at ranking a new site there or is the authority of those sites enouogh to scare you off even though they have no backlinks to that url?

Thanks.

Assuming you can build decent links, yes, you can get into the top 5.

take a look at the page rank for those sites that are ranking the keyword, that should give you a good idea.

Check how any internal links are pointing to those specific pages, you would sometimes be amazed to see 1000s all with high page authority.

Thanks guys.

PR ranges from - 0 - 3.

Virtually no links on any of the URL's apart from inbound links.

My thinking is to get a EMD and make the whole site about that one keyword (it's a product keyword) and try to out rank the authority sites.

I dont know about you, but using non EMD is a better choice to me. I can use my "brand" domain name as the anchor text, instead of the EMD that look abit spammy.

I'm usually a little bit careful about going after product name keywords when the first page is full of large e commerce sites like ebay or amazon, or authority sites like wikipedia, for that term. for example, I'm happier going after the phrase 'product name review', than I am about going after 'product name' or something like 'buy product name' where the presence of the big e-commerce sites shows quite clearly what type of sites Google prefers to rank for that term.

Ideally, as an affiliate, I like to see other affiliate sites ranking on the first page. And EMDs don't carry a great deal of benefit these days.

Root domain authority is more influential on rankings than it's ever been. You'll see urls with zero backlinks on authority sites ranking high for the keyword you are pursuing and you might smile thinking you'll beat them easily. But you'll be surprised when you try and find it difficult to outrank them.

So you are saying no authority on specific page that is ranking? well domain authority what mattes here.
And yes you can rank your website here easily..

Sorry I am only getting back to this now.

Here is what the competition looks like for the main KW:

Just bumping this as I added a pic of the competition :).

This is really holding me back on my keyword research as I am finding a lot like this and not sure if it's good or bad!

Thanks!

So you think this is workable then? Would you count it as low or med comp? Cheers

Jump in and do your best. This will be a future reference for you.
