Quick question....If I want to rank for a keyword in my country which has a competition of 500,000 globally but only 12,000 locally, if my domain is country specific would I still be competing with the 500,000 globally? could I potentially rank on page 1 in my country? is there anything else I need to do? in addition with other seo techniques?

Thank you

If its a country specific keyword, to my knowledge it will be harder for you to compete in the global market since your server is somewhere else. If its REALLY worth the effort I think you should look into hosting in the country that you are marketing too, easier SERPs could be worth the effort!

I dont want to compete globally...and no the keyword is not country specific.I just want to rank in my own country.

Thanks for your reply

hosting in country specific region does help, but is very little.

But biggest hurdle is that most people search typing Google.com which is global - US based. This is out of sheer habit.

However, if they choose google.co.uk you have better chance. Also in the Google.co.uk - you have option where one can search locally. This is where you will have much higher chances.

Therefore, fundamentally, dont worry too much about geo-location - always aim for scoring yourself in global content - unless you have very geo specific content.

Hope I was clear.

For regular surfers using google, the search page will automatically default to the local version. So if they're in the UK their default google page will be .co.uk, if in Japan it will be .co.jp, etc

If you want to compete locally I suggest that you use a local tld for you site, i.e. if you want to compete in the UK use a .co.uk domain.

Another thing that you can do is submit your site to Google's webmaster tools and set the geo-location to the country that you wish to target with your site.

Good luck

True google will automatically set itself to country of origin, so in theory should rank better?

in short if your page is from the that country, and you want to rank country specific then you are only up against 12000 and not the 500000.

i think thats what you were asking?

Thanks to all little clearer now.
