Okay so heres my question, when looking at my top 3 competition in google for a keyword im thinking about targeting the pages, which are not the home pages, only have 10 to 20 links. However the domain may have a thousand. Does the amount of links the domain has have a big effect on how hard it will be to outrank it. In otherwords should it take much effort to outrank these pages that only have in some cases single digit backlink numbers? Thanks for your help

If the domain have a few thousand backlinks, and the url only 20-30 it shouldn't be hard to outrank it. Just mix it up a bit with web 2.0's, social bookmarking, blog comments, profiles, article marketing, edu's, you know the drill.

Exactly, just look at some examples on how a particular page of an authority domain doesn't have to be hard to outrank.
Amazon, About and all major e-commerce sites have thousands of backlinks pointing to the domains but it's very easy to outrank the page of a specific product.
