Hi all I had a site get punished after Penguin 2.0 but it still gets a few hundred visitors per month so I'd like to keep that site in addition to creating a new one. However, the keyword gets over 100k searches per month so I want to target it with a fresh site and get on page one again. They'd be on the same Hostgator account so therefore their IP would be the same. Is having two sites from the same IP targeting the same keyword a bad idea?

Shared hosting accounts have upwards of 100,000 sites on the same IP/server. Given this, there is no way Google could penalize two sites in the same niche just b/c they're on the same IP. I'd recommend Privacy on the second domain, but that's all you will need.

By the sounds of it, even if I did get another hostgator account they might still be on the same IP address.

Wouldn't worry about it. Would probably just keep the Whois private just for good measure (for example, so your competitors don't see what you're doing).
