Still Debating if I should build a local SEO website for my area or just a general one and not focus on SEO for it because I will be getting most of my clients through cold calling and can diversify to the whole country rather than just one area of the country? What do you guys think?

Start small, get experience and paying clients, build a business locally then expand when the time is right. Slow and steady wins the race!

^ This!!! Too many people go balls to the wall, spend a crap ton of money thinking they are going to explode their business by throwing money at it. I'm not saying go slow, but take your time and build up. It takes 5-10 years to be an overnight success.

As far as the website, it wouldn't hurt to build it now if you have the capital. But I'd stick to the local aspect at first and just have the website there to have it, just to start getting juice for expansion in the future.. Also to point local clients to if they ask for your web address.

    Good luck!

Use Google Keywords planner to check the number of searches for your niche/industry in your area and then asses if you should ignore SEO or not.

I would definitly start local with any customer facing business. At the national level, you're competing with huge companies with big budgets. More than that, for certain businesses, Google is much more likely to serve clients results based on their IP, therefore local businesses, than international businesses. I would use this to your advantage as much as possible until you can grow and deliver. to a mass market.

It really depends on your business and the products you offer. If your business is made over the phone through the whole country, than it would be a waste of money just to focus on local SEO.

So my suggestion is to build a site that is specifically targeted to your niche, rather your town or anything else.
