Do blog comments help with engagement and community building anymore, or are they mostly ignored now?

Blog comments can still help with engagement and community building when they're genuine and add value to the discussion. Common mistake is treating comments as a link-building tactic instead of a way to build relationships and trust.

Only if the site has real readers.

For most blogs now, comments are pretty dead or full of spam. I’d keep them if they add real discussion, but I wouldn’t rely on them for SEO.

They still help as long as they are real and bring value to the discussion. Blog comments won’t do much for SEO, but they will help you build relationships, increase visibility and drive targeted traffic.

On generic or heavily automated blogs, comment sections are mostly dead zones filled with spam. However, for high-quality niche sites, they still work incredibly well for community building if the author actually replies. Real users don't comment just to say 'great post' anymore; they only engage when the content shares a unique opinion or asks a highly specific question that triggers a discussion.

I think blog comments no longer provide as much value as they once did. They tend to be more about sharing opinions and feedback than fostering meaningful interaction between people.

Blog comments work if they are niche relevant and contextual. Earlier, spamming used to work but those tactics only work for spammy niches like pharma and gambling.

I think blog comments can still help with engagement and relationship building, but they're not as powerful as they used to be for SEO.

In highly specialized industries, technical blogs, or tight knit hobby communities, blog comments remain active spaces for valuable, deep discussions with the author.

Many people prefer social media now, but blog comments have value. They provide direct feedback and help build trust with your audience.

It helps but it is not as what it used to be, mainly because of social media.

Use them as the main link source for your lowest tier. They're only really useful for helping to index/prop up mid-tier urls.

Unless you're talking about blog comments on your own site? If you are, just get a couple of social profiles set up and bulked out instead, and try and build engagement on those. You will get far more out of those than having to moderate comments on your own properties.

I think blog comments still have value, but their role has changed. Years ago, comments were often the main place for discussion. Now, a lot of those conversations happen on social media, Reddit, or newsletters. That said, a thoughtful comment section can still help build a loyal community around a blog.

spam is also a big reason comments lost value. many sites turned them off or heavily moderated them, so engagement quality varies a lot.

Comments only work if your site gets real traffic. On dead blogs, they are spam. On active niche communities, they still build loyalty. But for SEO? They are worthless now. Social media pulled the audience away.

for SEO the direct link value from comment sections is basically nothing now but the engagement signal of people commenting and returning to a post can help.

Blog comments can still be useful for engagement and community building, especially in active niches. Even if they don't directly impact rankings, they can provide feedback, encourage discussion, and show that readers are interacting with the content.

the problem is that most blog comments are spammy, and readers just ignore them. They are not worth the effort it take when social media exists
