https://twitter.com/methode/status/725198813485477888 Gary's from Google. I do notice posts from my sites that have many comments in combination with other social signals have high rankings. Also I think it helps in getting more relevant keywords, LSIs, things like that.

Overall, the comments on a blog impact the ranking a great deal. That’s why it’s a good idea to encourage your readers to add comments whenever they can. Also, you should encourage readers to add comments that will contribute to your Blog, not just generic ones. The higher the quality of the comments (and, of course, your content) the higher the rankings. Furthermore, if you want to encourage people to keep commenting, take some time to reply to your comments daily.

Comments mean that users visit and spend time on your site, and this will certainly attract more visitors to your site. Even if you are not working on SEO, the traffic that will be generated on your site will automatically increase your site’s ranking.

I guess comments won't help on rankings, because there are a ton with good rankings with comment section closed. But, it is indeed an indicator that your blog is popular and drive indirect user behaviors and dwindle time, etc, long tails, thus, more traffics in the long run?
