I've just recently registered a new domain, if I put up a coming soon page with some sort of design, text, and email mailing list sign up, etc. Would that in anyway affect SEO on my website? (My apologies if this is the wrong section, couldn't figure out where else to ask this question).

No, google will just crawl it and see that it is under development. When you get your website fully developed, I suggest you get your pages and main page indexed fast.

Thanks for the reply, I'll take your advice on this one! :D

For a second there I thought this was going to be another negative SEO thread.

Anyway, I've created "Coming Soon" pages for most of my websites at one point or another and I've never had an issue with poor rankings because of these pages.

Yes because its practically a "Site Under Construction" plus it does not have content. To play it safe, you can place a - no index no follow- attribute to the page.
