4. Now cover the middle area where the two boxes meet with your hand or fingers.
5. Watch closely.

without this limitation you wouldn't understand too well what you see, would you? It's not a limitation, it's a necessity.

Putting your finger across the white highlight stopped your brain from making a subconscious decision regarding the contrast between the two areas and the resultant perceived shades of grey.
