Comcast is annoying me

For everyone that uses comcast internet cable. Do you guys get annoying calls from them if you use/do the following?

Torrents
download too much
run bots (scrapebox)

I got a call from comcast (my brother picked it up) and they were saying we have a bot running on our computer (in other words, they were warning us that we may have a virus). They were suggesting its a bot that could supposedly read keystrokes.

It was yesterday and I know I was running scrapebox yesterday. I also have norton 360 and other security measures. So I'm pretty sure they are just referring to one of the programs I use such as scrapebox or senuke.

Only thing I've gotten from Comcast is letters when going over 1TB a month in downloads. Just basically telling me that they knew I used over 1TB, and pointed out how high of a usage it was compared to most users.

But how could they see any of those as a keylogger?
A keylogger isnt that visible atleast not for a ISP

I have no idea. I'm 100% sure my computer is free from malware/spyware, tracking cookides, etc too

I normally just use quick scans using norton and malware bytes (since those look though the windows folders and root files). I use spyware blaster to prevent spyware from getting to my computer.

The fact that they detected a bot suggest they are somehow observing what I do on my network which is kinda making me feel uncomfortable.
 
Has anyone ever gotten any of these "consequences" or heard about anyone receiving them?
 
K, my brother didn't mention some info before hand, but now I'm sure they just detected a bot and its probably scrapebox.

On my bros computer, he has comcast safeguard (useless, told him he didn't need it along with norton). He said the program detected something over the network I guess and the info was sent to comcast.

Thats probably why we got that call.
 
They use to do the same thing to me for downloading movies and shit, at times even asked me to stop doing it so. That is when I decide to get FIOS. More than worth it.

Calls and way better than letters. I letters usually warn you to stop or face consequences, while calls just tell you in a friendly manner that you're using too much bandwidth compared to others.

Perhaps its so, long time since i worked whit these kind of things, and since i am not american i dont know for sure how it works over there whit all new laws thats beeing added. :)
 
your probably using too much bandwith running scrapebox...maybe you should look into getting a vps?
 
Comcast now have it where you can use only 250GB of data for your internet. No matter which plan it is that you got you can't go over 250GB. I'm not sure if you will be charge if you go over.
 
there is no way scrape box uses too much bandwith... at least I don't think.

I go over 250GB every month with Comcast. They advertise an unlimited plan, and thus have to legally allow for that. They've had court cases over it.

"If a customer uses more than 250GB and is one of the top users of our service, he or she may be contacted by Comcast to notify them of excessive use."

They have had that in place for years now, simply all they will do is send you a letter if you are in the very top amount of bandwidth consumers. Like I stated earlier in the thread, I haven't gotten a letter for anything less than 1TB of usage. If you do a quick Google search you will find that this 250GB "cap" business goes back several years.

thanks. I kinda figured this as well.

One thing i wanted to mention though, I find that using scrapebox without an Anti-Virus is risky as you are submitting comments to thousands of websites. I often get messages from norton saying "exploit or blacktool something detected, your computer is protected."
 
If you are expanding your bandwidth certain times I find something of that sort sound.But I never find anything annoying me.You should replace your comcast in that case.:)
 
I'd get that Comcast software off that computer today. You have no idea what it's doing, what it's reporting, etc...

The ISP-provided "security" software that I've seen has all been bloated crap.

Launch Task Manager occasionally, and run a Google search of any process you do not recognize, or any that appear to be randomly named "aabbdff.exe" for example. 0 hits in Google is almost always an infection.

Run frequent online scans using TrendMicro's Housecall or Eset's Online Scanner. They have the most-current virus definition files and will have the highest detection rates. But if your O/S is not legit/authentic MS software, it is very difficult to detect a rootkit.

A lot of these "free proxies" you see posted in places (like here) are infected machines that are part of a 'bot net. Your computer might be one, meaning that your ISP may be seeing your computer doing a whole lot worse than what you are actually doing; someone else could be sending out email spam, geo-specific ads on CL, or whatever.

The temptation is to assume that you actually know something. That is how so many of these blackhat hackers achieve success. You don't "know" anything. Exploits succeed in evading detection by well-paid industry professionals. The average person hasn't got a chance.

Nowhere does Comcast say that they provide unlimited internet...at least not that I've seen.
