This might be obvious but you never know:

I'm going to build a local UK site, should I pick a .co.uk domain or does Google still prefer to rank .com domains even if the site's targetting a UK audience?

    Cheers

I would get both the co.uk and the .uk tld of the domain, build the website on the .uk and redirect the co.uk to the .uk.

Yea co.uk is always going to be better - I don't know if it will make any difference in terms of SEO but its going to look better to your visitors if they are in the UK - will automatically build more trust.

TLD extensions is not important. Sometimes it will be boring to type.
If you want to keep uk phrase then marge it with .com. Example: serviceuk.com instead of service.co.uk

Google is looking for fresh contents now-a-days not tld.

UK local site then its .co.uk.

If the other domains were available I would buy them to stop someone else having them but if its local UK only then its .co.uk only.

Or buy a (.com) and (co.uk) and build your site on the (.com) domain and redirect from the (co.uk)

I am currently ranking .com and .co.uk's fine on Google for UK sites. Just make sure you set the preference in Google web master tools.

I suggest go with co.uk that will be easy to rank locally.

You can use either but I prefer .co.uk when my site is for UK customers as it seems more targetted. Either will rank well though.

People expect .co.uk when typing a uk-based address but you should also have the .com (has been said before, just adding another voice...). Personally I wouldn't bother with the .uk - I have never, ever visited a .uk site (though of course that might change) and wouldn't think to type it. Having said that, if you expect a fair amount of foreign traffic it could be worth it since they might not know that .co.uk is the norm. And having said *that*, those people would likely try .com

You should use .co.uk. It will better because locally it is easy to ranked.

I would recommend using a .co.uk domain for UK local searches, in the main they appear to rank easier to local searches. I would then register the .com and redirect it.
