Collection Pages & GWT

Hey guys,
For my ecom store when I check my GWT I have noticed that many collection pages are ranking for keywords that are targeting my homepage.

These collection pages don't target this money keyword but some appear as site links for the homepage. Wondering if this is causing them to be triggered in GWT as ranking for these keywords.

I have done things to ensure that they don't target the homepage keyword, including ensuring the keyword count is non-existent within those pages.

Would the sitelinks be the reason for them appearing as ranking for the money term of GWT? I have manually checked and the exact pages are not showing up, only the homepage. However, even some collection pages that aren't site links appear to be ranking for the money term on GWT, so slightly confused.

Overall I am concerned that this is confusing Google and may be holding back the homepage from ranking higher on the money keyword.

This is certainly a common problem. I would recommend to give sometime to let Google understand. If it doesn't work then you could actually increase some content in the homepage. Also what about the collection page contents, did you focused the same keywords there?

Hey! I went through all the collection page content some time ago to ensure the keyword count was not focused, at all, meaning the money keyword doesn't appear in the content, as well as the title tags and meta desc.

In regards to homepage content I already have enough and don't want to over do things, is there any other recommendations you have to make it clear to Google?

Hmmm, the site is over 3 years old.

My suggestion would be, Check and improve site links and collection pages to match your intended keywords, making sure Google in GWT understands clearly.

Look into possible issues and fine-tune page content to enhance the homepage's ranking for the main keyword.
