What would you recommend in this case?

I have several products that belong to one specific collection page. However, one of those product pages is outranking the collection page for both the main and secondary keywords. The collection page currently has no backlinks, while that product page has 5.

The product page receives a significant number of clicks and impressions, but recently the main keywords have dropped.

Should I focus on removing the existing backlinks from the product page? Would it be beneficial to redirect them to the collection page instead? And should I disavow the remaining ones (if that still helps)?

I'm not a 100% expert on this, but here are some suggestions!

✅ What to Do (Recommended Strategy)

Strengthen the Collection Page

  • Add optimized content: a descriptive introduction, H2 subheadings with secondary keywords, and a short explanation about the product line.
  • Include internal links (with relevant anchor text) from other product and category pages pointing to the collection page.
  • Add breadcrumbs and improve navigation, this helps Google understand the site hierarchy.
  • Start building backlinks specifically for the collection page. through guest posts, blog mentions, niche directories, etc.

Leverage the Product Page That Ranks Well
  • Add internal links within the product page that point to the collection (e.g., “See more products from this collection here”).
  • Keep the product’s backlinks, they strengthen the domain and can indirectly help the collection if interlinked properly.
  • If the product ever goes out of stock or is discontinued, then apply a 301 redirect to the collection page (but only in that case).
Check Search Intent
  • Sometimes Google ranks a product page higher because users are looking for something more specific.
  • In that case, it’s best to optimize both the product and collection pages with different goals:
    • Collection Page: focus on “buy [category],” “best [category],” or other category-level keywords.
    • Product Page: focus on product name, model, and detailed attributes.
Summary of the Recommendation:
Do not remove or disavow backlinks.
Instead, strengthen the collection page with better content, structure, and targeted backlinks, and add internal links between the product and collection pages.

I hope this makes you think or come to a decision bro, I hope this at least helps a little bro on your website!.
I had a website in the past, it was a good hosting, so today I don't have a website, but I know a few things!! :')

This is a tricky situation, where the product page outranks the collection page. It’s unclear how anyone who has encountered this situation has managed to maintain SEO effectiveness for both pages.

One thing that helped me was adding internal links from other products to the collection page while keeping the product backlinks intact.

Removing or disavowing the backlinks is not something I would advise. Instead, make strategic use of them by optimizing internal linking to point to the collection page with pertinent anchor text while maintaining the live product page. To increase the authority of the collection page, you can also create high-quality backlinks to it directly. This keeps the product page's existing traffic and link equity while gradually assisting Google in recognizing the collection page as the primary resource for that subject.

Do not remove or redirect those 5 product page backlinks! That's valuable link juice wasted, tbh. Your problem isn't those links; it's the lack of authority on the Collection Page and the search intent confusion. The drop is likely Google realizing the product page wasn't the best match for the broad keyword.

  • Fix Authority/Intent: You gotta build new, high-quality links directly to the Collection Page right now. That page is the broad keyword hub, and the product page is too specific for the main terms.
  • Fix Cannibalization: Use a canonical tag on the product page to point to the Collection Page. This tells Google, "Hey, all authority for the broad keyword belongs here (the Collection Page)," consolidating all the link juice.
  • Links: You need that link juice! You must also ensure the Collection Page's content is not thin and better aligns with the broad search intent than the Product Page.
