I am going to start cold calling business owners and ask them if they would be interested in having a website made for them since they don't have one. The issue is that I don't really know what to say to get them interested? Should I ask questions about their business and why they don't have a website yet? Basically I am looking for some tips on cold calling businesses and offering web design services. I am sure some of you have done that so please help me out if you could. Thanks :)

You can ask them if they are interested,
Something like. Hi, i found your information on the yellowpages and wanted to see if your company would like to have a website designed to give you better visibility, so people can find your company on the internet.

If they have a good response, then you can continue.

Lastly, if you need to list for your cold calling list, you may want to use this tool: leadboxapp.com

Bas gave you the thinking you need to get started. One you get a concept of what it is, you'll need to give no fucks about sales at all. It's all about perception manipulation, get them to agree to meeting you up to discuss more over lunch, ive them a foot in the door, upsell with authority and results, problem solved. Not every single person will react the same, some you need incentives to make a sale, some you can just flat out offer them and they will buy, and others will say no consistantly even if they need it.

in my experience with cold calling is to

    a. avoid asking close ended questions
    b. provide something of value that is useful to that business for FREE
    c. you have thirty seconds before the guy decides he wants to speak to your further or not, so you will have to deliver and plan a sales pitch accorsingly
    d. ask for refrences
    e. try get background information on the firm you are calling. names, types of businesses, it helps in building a conversation
    f. you often are going to have gatekeepers answer the phone, a good trick to get past them is to tell them some really technical they cant understand, there is a good chance they would connect you to the decision maker in the firm
    h. for me a call is successful even if i get the decision makers e-mail address. I would quickly send him an e-mail with an introduction video which has me in it. (great to establish trust!) with a references of a few branded clients
