Coding something up in PHP and selling it on Flippa/dp?

Has anyone here tried coding some script or web app in PHP and then selling it on flippa and/or dp as a service or something?

You think it would work? If you do, what kind of script would you recommend?

Haven't coded a script specifically for being sold on Flippa, but I have done custom coding on sites that were later sold on Flippa, which a selling point was that it's custom coded.

Not too sure how you would sell a script as a service (unless it manipulating something), but yes you could easily sell rights to scripts via DP or even BHW. If you're up for the challenge, you could even code scripts and sell them at the Envato market (codecanyon).

In regards to a service though, I do have a few scripts that I use a membership platform for (I host the script and they pay a fee). This might be more of what you're talking about... It's quite easy to do, you just have to provide more support than if you were just selling a copy. It also has to be something that someones willing for you to host (something very worth while).

If you plan to sell a script, you better know what your doing or else you will be crucified if it fails, has holes or just plain doesnt work. Selling scripts on DP/Flippa/CC probably wouldnt net you much money. Instead you would want to look at opening your own website to sell it so you can get 100% of the profits (minus cc/paypal fees) and you can market directly to the users and offer additional services.

If you want to create a custom script to sell as a service (SaaS) then you'll need to jump through some more hoops such as pen testing, load balancing and optimization, clustering, advanced system management etc. Giving the code to someone else to deal with is one thing, but taking their money and saying you'll handle all of it is an entirely new beast. A single break in would likely lose you more than 60% of your userbase.

I guess the only simple question left for me to ask is, what can I code up in PHP that would sell on flippa for like at least $100? Your suggestions would be great.

I actually coded something and put it on a website and put it on flippa for experiment. The $19 was a free coupon I found on BHW so there was nothing to lose. Sadly, so far no bid has been put on that. I'm not sure I can mention the site here because I might get accused of promoting it.

Pick something you think would do good, or pick a niche.

I mainly do work in ecommerce, so I create modules to extend shopping cart functionalities. Because ecommerce is about directly making money, then I can sell modules for fairly high prices ($60+ each no problem) with relatively little code. The only hurdle comes from providing support. Conflicts with other modules, cart upgrades, different server configurations etc.


You can make anything sell well if its actually worth it. The hardest to break into would be actual shopping carts (competing with zencart, oscommerce, magento etc) and forums (competing with vbulletin, smf and ipb.)
Just ask around and see what people want to optimize and try to create a plan that would do that. Bonus if you can add in other related functionality.

if you're selling a script it needs to be bug free. be sure to include contact info in the script. you can charge if people contact you because they need it customized. this works for you because all you have to do is slightly tweak what you have already done and get paid well to do it

selling a service is great if you're a long term thinker. it takes time to get moving and requires more maintenance but the consistent income can be pretty lucrative. you should basically expect to become a website and app developer with this route

There's a lot of cash to be made in writing a custom wordpress plugin, selling it on your own website for a while, and then selling that website on Flippa.
