looking at buying a few .co domain names for a local venture, most of the .coms have gone but there are .net and orgs available

this would be a commercial venture as something would be sold

1. Are .co TLDs ok for this
2. Can they be ranked in the same way as .coms?

I would prefer .net to .co, and it's cheaper.
Most people don't know .co and will misunderstand and think you are a .com
causing you to loose traffic and even emails to the .com

Composing your name with some prefix or suffix, but still using the well known .com, might be an alternative.

Sure they can be ranked just as well, but as mentioned above, there's a huge possibility of being mistaken as dotcom. Personally I don't see any reason to go for .co ever, as they're just "rip-off's" of dotcoms, so .net or .org would be a better choice. Or prefix/suffix.

.co ranked as well as .net and .org, but not anymore.

I prefer .co to .com, personally. They rank the same, but it's just a personal preference.

ive ranked .cos in pharmacy niche without issues.
