I mean are they lifetime free or just for a year and then You have to pay them alot to keep the domain? Whats the catch?

they are free longer than 1 year, some registered .co.cc domains you need to buy but most are free...

Apart from some premium names, the domains are free for life, although you have to renew them annually.
I've registered and renewed, and haven't been charged a cent.
