I was listening to a blogging podcast last week and they interviewed a site owner who claims to get 100k+ pageviews from a cluster of articles that have 80% duplicate content.
His articles are like this: (only an example)
Do You Have To Switch On Airplane Mode On Delta Airlines Flights?
Do You Have To Switch On Airplane Mode On American Airlines Flights?
Do You Have To Switch On Airplane Mode On Southwest Airlines Flights?
Do You Have To Switch On Airplane Mode On United Airlines Flights?
Do You Have To Switch On Airplane Mode On Air Canada Flights?
...
Each article will have the same subheadings (why do you have to switch on airplane mode, what happens if you don't ...) and the same answers pretty much so instead of writing 50 articles that are unique (which is almost impossible anyway) he wrote one very in-depth article and replaced the name of the airline with find and replace.
Each airline might have their own policies (I don't know, this is just the first example that came into my head) so each article will be a little different and have its own images, so it wont be 100% the same but maybe about 80%.
I have never really thought about this before but when you think about it this makes a lot of sense. The reader will always click on an article that is targeted specifically at his airline first and not on a general article (On Which Airlines Do You Have To Switch On Airplane Mode?). So from a user's perspective, this makes 100% sense.
For site owners this is great too, you spend a lot of time once, truly creating the best article on this topic and then only adjust it slightly for each airline. You can also interlink your articles very easily.
Google ranks a lot of nonsense these days, has huge indexing issues and more so I know it's very hard to predict how Google likes this but what do you think about it?
I found a cluster in my niche that would easily allow me to create 200+ articles with one outline. Should I go for it? Has anyone tried something like this before?
