Clueless about redirections.

I know what redirections are, have done it.

But when it comes to redirecting a website I have no clue.

I want to take my main site (EMD) and redirect it to a new site I want to build (brand name).

What I want to do is take every single article of the EMD and redirect it, but I'm not sure of what I should look for.

If you can answer to at least one question, I'd highly appreciate it

My questions are:

1. Do I have to be paying for the domain and hosting, of the EMD, or do I only have to pay for the domain name?

2. If I don't need to keep the hosting, how do I redirect article by article to avoid losing rankings? (have bluehost hosting and domain name if that helps)

3. Is there anything I have to do with the EMD besides paying for the domain name)?

4. If I want to take all the articles to the new page, do I deindex on the EMD? Do I robot txt them (doubt it but worth asking) ? Do I just leave them?

1 & 2. if you just want to redirect the EMD -> 301 the whole domain (possible with cms as well as domain management panel). You need to research for some redirection plugin if you want to redirect each and every link. So EMD 301 can be done with domain only, each link redirect would need both domain & hosting.

3. No, you can just keep it registered and make sure nothing wrong is going with 301 redirect. Or keep domain+hosting and make sure plugin is working correctly once in a while.

4. Do not deindex, please. 301 is usually a htaccess redirect (in case of hosting) so bots doesn't reach robot.txt so nothing else to do.

You have to keep EMD registered forever to get link juice.

Just redirect EMD to new domain. Redirect using .htaccess or redirection plugin.

Do not try to deindex EMD.

Thank you for the long answer.

My website doesn't really have any link strength right now. I was mainly interested in making use of those broken links.

Although I didn't want to lose the hosting either.

I have a question, from where do you do the redirection of the domain?

I think blue host allows me to pass the plan from a domain to another, so the EMD would lose its hosting.

As it is something I have never done, could you tell me where do you exactly perform the redirection?

Still keep the article indexed on the EMD? I don't want it to intervene with my new website.

If I wanted to redirect after removing the hosting, how would this answer change?

You can host on server where you are hosting new domain.

As you're going with full domain 301, google should remove all your content from it's index and index the new site and new content. You might like to check "wild card redirection" in your panel too, if you're regenerating same content on new site, the wild card redirection can redirect www.old-domain.com to www.new-domain.com and redirect pages to new pages like www.old-domain.com/some-post to www.new-domain.com/some-post.
