Does free cloudflare really increase site speed? Any thought about this?

it could help some. But usually the issue is either going to be the host that is over sold on the server but more often than not its the way the site is config. You can use gtmetrix.com to scan your site and it will give you some things that you can do to help speed it up.

It's not all about the speed, but about ddos protection, backup, different ip blocks, etc. There are a lot more advantages to using cloudflare than just speed.

It is actually the other way round, it will decrease the speed, but keep you safe from ddos attacks and loosing bandwidth.

Cloudflare CDN is very powerful.

It has got some powerful settings and on of that setting is know as "Page Rule"

Using page rule you can actually cache dynamic websites like wordpress, Joomla on fly. Just create a new page rule and then select cache all. Read this official page..

If you are using wordpress, then remember to disable the admin toolbar, or it will also get cached.

Actually, for the test, I enabled the page rules and made CloudFlare settings to keep the cache for one year and edge cache for one month. And then I disabled the server to see if CloudFlare works ( CloudFlare ha one option called "Always Online" ) and even when my server was switched off for 3 days, my site was running smoothly ).

Yes. I use cloudflare alongside with w3 total cache and all my sites get faster with this combination. The best thing about cloudflare is the free cdn. I would be pretty fucked without It.

It does help, but you need a good host behind it too. Free SSL and protection from ddos etc is also a free bonus

If you have a lot of images too the Cloudflare CDN is really helpful.

Can you explain how it decreases speed? I tried different configurations and testing, and my speed results in gtmetrix actually increased.

Cloudflare is especially useful if your host server is different from where your clients would be accessing your pages from.

If your host is in New York, your client is in Asia then all that data has to cross the ocean to get to your client, and even at the speed of light that is going to be slow. If you use cloudflare they'll have a cache on one of their Asia servers that would serve it up to your client a lot faster.

Now if your host server is in New York, and your client is also in New York then the difference that cloudflare makes probably isn't as big.
