Cloning a Website

I was wondering about cloning a website, and how search engines might view that. I have a wordpress autoblog/media fansite setup that exploits a misspelled keyword niche. I don't know how it's gonna do cause I'm still in the process of setting it up. While I'm setting it up, I'm noticing that it might do good with correctly spelled keywords. So I'm thinking I'll clone it, and set it up to use the correctly spelled words on a different domain. I'm thinking they both might do well, because the right spelling keywords have more traffic, but higher competition, and the wrongly spelled ones have the opposite obviously.

Will google penalize either site for this?

I could never tell if it had an effect... How can you tell?
My rankings did not drop but then again, i was doing SEO on one, and not doing much on the other...

I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe that if Google notices duplicate content, it does a variety of checks. If the content is identical, it will either give the original site all the traffic "or" rotate between the links. I don't think it harms individual SEO in the technical sense - it just makes having identical sites less practical.

I don't think it worries much about clones since popular sites have articles stolen from them all the time. You'll probably run into trouble if you have an excessive number of clearly identical sites, though.

I dont think even the mighty google can check every site against each other, Just imagine the computing power it would need with somthing like a trillion web pages.

I think as long as its not easily linked to you othe site, you should be OK, Like on the same IP. I think the Google duplicate content applies to stuff on the same site.

for instance I have a site that simply scrapes content from UK news sources and puts it on my site. 100% duplicate content. It has a page rank of 4 and is on page one of Google for about 4 keywords.

It's not a good idea. You might get away with it for awhile, but if you clone an authority site, and they look at how new your site is you could risk being deindexed.

good opinion. but take care not to link from the cloned website to your other site. or for that matter don't link to both the clones sites from same sources in your link building.
