Client Won't Pay

So I have done work for a website.

She was a little sketchy about working at first, didn't want to pay for a monthly service of £300 a month.

Instead she said if I got her to first page she would pay £1000, stupidly didn't take a deposit. I have a contract but don't really fancy taking it to court due to costs and effort.

It only took a few weeks to rank (they was on second page)

Any advice and getting the money?

PS. I'm going to remove the work if she doesn't pay anyway, was just looking for advice on actually getting the funds off her.

What's the wording of the contract ?

What industry is the client in ?
 
don't threat her, tell her gently that if she doesn't pay then u will have to remove all the works that u did for her, and it may cause a permanent drop in ranking which may take few years to fix. U will wait til....and then u will be forced to remove the works (don't tell her the details of the work/backlinking works u did there).
 
Last ditch effort if all else fails offer her a payment plan to get something for the work already done with something immediately paid or removal of work/rankings etc.

She was asking specifically about the work I don actually the other day which made me suspicious.

I'll keep dialog with her and see what she says, then i'll have no choice but to remove them.

I haven't got a copy of it to hand, but it was a standard contract that I had edited.

The main terms of the contract were regarding payment being made upto 7 days after X keyword was ranking on page one.

There is a default clause also.
 
Take down the site, get your providers to revert any guest posts etc.

Buy a post on Huff shittalking/ exposing her and her business.

Always write up a contract. You have no leg to stand on. I would call her 3 times a day until she pays up. I work in sales and if someone declines on their payment to me I will call them 10 times a day. Call them with their own area code or block your number. Get them on the phone, and collect your money.

Put a really embarrassing lock page on it.

"Site.com is down until futher notice after the owner failed to pay for work completed on the website. In the mean time check out competitor.com for all your [niche] needs."

Bonus points if you put a counter on it that says:

1234 people have been redirected to competitor.com so far!

I knew of a business in my town that once did flooring for a company that decided not to pay them.

So the flooring company bought one of those big black signs that you see on the highway, put it just outside the city limits in the highest-traffic area possible between the company's town and a neighboring town, and wrote "(business) NOT PAYING (flooring company) FOR IT'S NEW RENOVATIONS! NOT COOL, (business), NOT COOL!"

It's basically the local equivalent of what you're proposing, and it's not even slander because it's true.

The legality would depend on the contract, which there is none, since you're defacing a website. He could do a billboard though.

I've got a contract, so I can always use that.

Does continuous calls work?

I don't have access to the site, all I did was mainly offpage work.

Of course it works. Every Friday I have thousands of dollars worth of declined payments that I have to go chase. Every friday I dial them over and over again - sometimes 5 6 or 7 times in a day each. You need some leverage - threaten to take the site down, even if you don't plan on doing on.

I came in the thread to suggest this. This definitely works. I had a local client last year stiffing me on a couple hundred and after 30-40 missed calls throughout the week, I left him a voicemail that this was up. The following Monday, I was paid, and given a ridiculous excuse. I got my money though and that's what matters.

That's unfortunate. Yes, they do work with certain types of people. Consider writing an article on one of the top web 2.0 website or a social media site and pinging it with a bunch of banklinks. Something like "Business name is a complete scam".

She has two websites, one which she never let me know about at all.

The one I ranked, according to her is her old site, however the contract states this domain in it.

The other domain is a new site, nothing been done to it, doesn't even rank in the top 100.

So basically she wants the work doing on the other domain before she pays, I suggested a 301 redirect however she tells me she wants to keep her old domain aswel. I'm not doing work for a site that isn't in the contract
