Client wiht penalized brand name?

I have a (brand new) client whose brand name site is penalized--he wants to hang onto it. I want to create a new site and just let the old one sit as it is, but he wants to connect the original to the new site somehow.

Obviously, I'm not keen on doing a 301 redirect from the penalized site to the brand new site we're creating (same brand name, different TLD) because I don't want it to pass along the penalty. I'm not sure how we could keep the penalized site in the mix other than to disavow links, start building new content, and give it a few months to recover.

Is there some subdomain trick that I'm overlooking that would allow us to circumvent this problem?

What is the best option here?

Well, you could simply 301 to a social media page and in it have the link to the new site.

/e: christian sex toys... thats something I haven't seen before xD
 
The best option would be to get the penalty removed, it's not that hard really and you can find someone to outsource the work to. If he really wants to keep it explain to him it's gonna take some time, charge him, and arbitrage the work.

If you decide to do a new domain which I don't suggest then 302 the old domain to the new domain.

I built a new site 301'd the old one and it was ranking awesome for about a week, then the penalty pass and both are screwed. I did a disavow tool and reconsideration request but it has been over 45 days so far and no movement. So in short, get it removed or you have to sent to another url. If they are a brick and mortar business this sucks because they have branding associated with the name. You can always but on the old site a landing page that says please look at our new and improved website that links them to a temp site until your old site recovers...

You should disavow the links and give it some time, or you can 302, but don't 301 in any case.
 
thanks all. yeah, i'm trying to convince him to not 301 it and just to disavow (going to be about 3wks, i'd guess, for that to click over)...in the meantime, i think a new url is good under a different tld because there is not guarantee that disavowing will work or that he'll just pop back up to the first page again.
 
Try to disavow links which are harmful to your website and start making good quality links that you will help your website.
 
I would 301 the old domain the his Brand's Facebook page which has the new URL (create one if he doesnt have one already) and then build the new site with new TLD. Evetually likely the tld will rank no.1 for his brand name and facebook page no.2.
 
I am in this exact position. Tried 3 reconsideration requests and denied each time. I ended up starting a new business name and site. Sucks so bad wish I could get it back...

What's the penalty for? Are you sure it's even an off site thing? Was this guy link spamming hard enough to get sandboxed or something? I would think if it's a legitimate business it'd be more likely some kind of duplicate content technical mess.

Like danny said what penalty did your client website get? Is it an off site penalty resulted by tons of low quality link spamming
or is it an on site penalty with lots of dup content?

I think there is a seo penalty checklist around here somewhere.
 
The thing with disavowing links is that you dont know what penalized you.
Start from the latest backlinks. use ahref to check the latest ones and guide your way down.
