@OP: That's the ballpark and not the rule. Before you start with the keywords you want to promote, check the top 10 placed sites in Google and analyze them in regards of age, PR, on-site SEO, backlinks, authority, etc. For instance if there are aged, high PR authority sites with tons of backlinks, there is no chance to outrank them, even if the total of competing websites is less than say 10,000.
On the other hand, if your analysis shows good potential you might be successfull with way more than 50,000 competitors (optimized for the same keyword).
IMPORTANT: Always look if there are articles from article directories on Google page 1! If so, check how many backlinks there are and then build more than your competitor. Hint: To get massive backlinks right from the start write another article, submit it to as many article directories (besides EZA), and link back to your EZA article from them.
