For the past 10 years, we've operated on the premise that the most important digital metric is the click that refers a person to a website. That click usually comes from a social distribution channel, like Facebook or Twitter, or a search engine, like Google or Bing. But according to industry experts, the click referral is becoming an idea of the past, soon to be replaced by content exposure

    Who's to blame?
Using click referrals as the most successful marketing metric was largely influenced by a free click referral measuring tool created in 2005 called Google Analytics. The tool was built to attribute successful marketing campaigns around referral clicks because referral clicks often come from Google Search, which Google monetizes.

    What's next?
"Clicks look like a high-performing tactic, but a lot of work is done to get you to type something into a search bar to begin with," AdRoll President Adam Berke tells Axios. Marketers are starting to attribute marketing success towards content exposure that drives you to click something, instead of the click itself. Two key formats increase content exposure: video and passive scrolling. Google and Facebook are investing heavily in products that embody these formats: YouTube and Instagram.

It all still begins with a click.

Also, before google analytics, we had awstats, before that we had the old school perl log analyzers. Also google analytics was called the urchin and wasn't invented by google.

But I'm sure marketers will sell a billion $ in books about content exposure instead of links.

Yes, I remember Gopher - even Archie, Veronica, and Jughead. But like Gopher, things advance and change. For some time many of use have known that time on page may be one of the more important signals. We now have some evidence of the time on page. Just like Archie, Veronica, and Jughead became items of the future past, perhaps it would be time to pay attention. And yes, I was on the internet when it was Arpnet and confined to a few universities with the high points being the occasional coke machine.

Never heard of arpnet (you mean arpanet? anyway I'm not that old either). I began IM in the mid 90's. Just used gopher cuz the books at the time mentioned it, never did anything with it. I knew a Veronica but she's probably not what you're referring to.

Sure, great that new marketing stuff is being pushed out there. Like calling mainframe computers the cloud. They're just changing the names around and selling books, but I guess that's how the biz is kept rolling.

    Why don't you check out:
    https://www.crazyegg.com/
    (Google account logon required)

I am not affiliated. The site shows you a heat map of your, or another, website and where people are spending more time. Of course, it can be gamed in any number of ways - such as opening multiple tabs and working down to the page, mouse bots, and the like. However, it seems to be the area that marketers and advertisers are moving to.

Veronica was a gopher client. Quite the whore too.

At the end of the day, it's all about CONVERSIONS.

That's what puts money in your bank account.

    No more. No less.

Still, CLICKS have a lot to do with it.
