Even thought the first post is old it is still a very interesting read for beginners.
Page rank was a big hype a couple of years ago but these days you are much better off using website like ahrefs or moz for your page quality research. Google doesn't even seem to update page rank rates that often anymore.

i think after your site gets on the first page of google, for whatever reason, the only thing that matters is how "useful" or "informative" your site is. this can be measured via click through rates, etc...
