If that's so, how would you explain the fact that big sites like Ask rank high for a ton of keywords with a really short article and little to no backlinks to the exact pages that are ranking high?

I get what you mean, though, but you are not entirely correct. While it is more important to have top quality backlinks to the exact page you are trying to rank for a specific keyword, it does help to naturally rank higher in the SERPs if you have a high pagerank root domain.
 
This is great post. I have learnt that our own page rank does not create affect to its position in the SERPs. It also says that PR is important if we are going to sell our web site's space for advertising. The PR will be increased based on total keyword's backlinks but SERP position will be increased based on only one keyword.
 
I use it only as a general reference about particular website's quality. Interesting read anyway. Thanks.

Trust, authority, and reputation dude - that's all that matters, the rest is smoke and mirrors.

What do you think will help your website rank the best, a link from a PR5 page on Sandras knitting patterns blog, or a link from a PR0 page on The Whitehouse website?

Chasing links from pages / sites with PR is for suckers, chasing links from the top authority sites is really where it's at.
 
while "nofollow" backlinks will not pass PR, is it worth for page ranking?

wow, after reading your thread, it really makes me understand now about PR and SERP ranking and why all SEO experts always say that you must look for quality backlinks with High PR to strength your keywords in SERP ranking..
still newbie about SEO..

I wouldn't go as far as saying that a site's pagerank doesn't matter for as far as its search engine rankings are concerned. Look at Ask.com for an example. It ranks for a hundreds of thousands of long tail keywords with 2-3 sentence long answers that usually don't even have any backlinks or only have a few. Would Ask.com rank that high for so many keywords if the pagerank of the front page would be 3 instead of 8?

I would, though, say that it's not a good idea to obsess over increasing the pagerank of your site as that is not the quickest way to increase traffic to your site. It's still better to concentrate on individual pages that target a specific keyword.
