Choosing the right hosting is harder than I thought

I’ve been trying to pick a good hosting provider, but there are so many options and mixed reviews everywhere. Some people say go cheap, others say invest more from the start. For those with experience, what actually matters most when choosing hosting?

With hosting, you get what you pay for. Cheap usually means the service may be slow and support is low quality.

If you are a beginner, then you may need good support. Good and fast service will not be cheap.

So you need to figure out which things are most important to you, and then, based on that, you can narrow your search.
 
I would always recommend you to go for a good reliable host with good reliable and affordable pricing, going super cheap will mostly end up back for you, because a hosting matters a lot, it is like your online office or sales shop, the website or the project, and uptime and good speed and quality is a must.
 
Only thing i can say for definite that will be agreed on by everyone is don't use godaddy hosting! lol.

Surely, no one recommends godaddy for hosting at all. The company itself have earned very bad reputation.
 
It all depends on what the goal of your website is. If you have a smaller blog, choose cheap, shared hosting. The cost is low and easy to maintain without any financial burden. If your website has larger data needs, choose VPS hosting.
 
I have been using Hetzner (shared hosting) for 15+ years without interruption. About 70+ sites hosted, 20+ clients with their own DA access. I am quite satisfied.
Not the best for custom email, especially for more frequent needs.

1. Hostinger has predatory low signup fees with massively increased renewal pricing.
2. Hostinger has aPanel (instead of cPanel, a proprietary hosting management back-end that has been said is difficult to transfer out of if you want to leave for any reason (see: 1.)

Depends what you want out of your hosting.

Good is a VERY relative term as it relates to hosting.

Ah got it, That makes sense the low signup price can be misleading if renewal costs jump and moving sites is tricky. Have you had to transfer a site from them before?
 
Tbh, the most important thing is speed and customer support. I’ve used Hostinger for a few projects and it’s a solid balance between price and performance, especially for beginners. Just avoid the super cheap 'unlimited' plans that slow down once you get a bit of traffic.

Thankfully, I have not.
I was given this same information before I tested them. I have had numerous service providers tell me if Hostinger or GoDaddy are involved in a project, they aren't interested in the work until I move to different platforms.

Someone showed me this search: 11+ Million reasons to NOT deal with GoDaddy:

Hosting for what? If it’s a html landing page you don’t need any hosting. Just signup for cloudflare and create a worker, it’s free and you can host static pages. Blazing fast on cloudflare edge.
 
If you don't know much about hosting, then go for one whose customers praise that support. Will help you move quickly and sort out any issues with little downtime. Then confirm renewal prices so your second year bill doesn't come as a shock

Yeah that makes sense, i guess support and reliability matter more than just going for the cheapest option. I’m still trying to figure out the right balance for my use case
 
I have actually found WPMU to be very reliable. The pricing is fair. But what stands out to me the most when choosing a hosting provider is the quality of support I can get, and WPMU is way ahead of the others in this. You have 24/7 live chat every time, and they'll walk with you throughout the entire process if you have any challenges. Also, if you're building Wordpress sites, they are really optimized for it.
 
I’ve been hosting my own stuff, setup a VPS & deploy your own sites. That way you got more control, there’s a slight learning curve involved though.

i'm doing the same for years and my experience (now 20+ sites):
- best price if you have many sites with heavy traffic
- you can optimize security, performance
- "slight learning curve" in this context is the most optimistic sentence ever :)
