Before I start, I will say I am bad at coding and somewhat good at graphic design and have only basic experience with blogs.
I have transfered my domain to my Blogger site, but since my coding skills are very basic and minimal I found it insufficient enough to customize the skins and functions.
On one hand Blogger has superior SEO and ranking advantage, but on the other hand WP is far more customizable as I see it. Blogger as absolutely free, WP is not. I downloaded the free version of WP, which does not include hosting, but I am ok with that. I have my own free hosting available. I will continue further testing, if I can easily customize stuff with it.

So any tips for my nob initiative? Which one should I use to setup a blog with my custom design?

Hey Kaiser_Soze,

First WP its open source meaning that will allways be free, but you will need your own hosting to host your domain with Wordpress. Check Hostgator they have cheap hosting. As for designing and customizing your own theme I think Wordpress is much easier than Blogger.

Like I said, hosting is not a problem for me :) So you think that WP is easier to configure and customize for someone like me, that is very bad coder?

Yeah Wordpess is in many ways better to configure and customiza than Blogger. Its easier also and there is a lot of documentation on the internet.

No question WP. You will regret using anything else (especially given that you describe yourself as a poor coder but a strong graphic designer).

And Wordpress is definitely free - you can even install it automatically using Fantastico (it comes with HostGator's CPanel if you're using that).

http://twoblog.com has reviews of many of the most popular blogging platforms. They are quite amusing (but I am affiliated with the site and completely biased).

Although I transferred my domain to Blogger, I think I will give WP a try for my soon-to-be blog. :)

WP wp wp any day over blogger - total control of your sites, unlimited amount of super funky plugins, ace for seo.

Wordpress hands down.
You can add so many functions to your blog with just a click installation plugings. Also tons of free themes.

Wordpress all the way. With the amount of configuration options and resources available, you never gonna regret going with WP :-)

Wordpress is the way to go! The software itself is free, and there are plenty more plugins, support, tutorials on this forum.

Blogging is one of the best off page techniques which i love the most.Blog can be created in many platforms like wordpress, livejournal, tumbler, blogger, typepad etc.But for the effective creation wordpress is the most affordable one 7 easy.cant say that blogger is nt easy enough,as far as wprdpress is said,it provides great features to build our blog.

I'm really new into the blogging scene, started mine a little less then a moth ago on blogger and as of a week ago picked up hosting a moved it to wordpress. If you are not comfortable with any type of codding I would definitely say use wordpress. If you have a old sense of html it might slip you up a bit as its beating me up a bit now getting used to how everything works inside wordpress.
