There have recently been a decent number of people offering to post Guest Posts on their websites.

This got me thinking, how do people decide what to write for Guest posts? You want the content to be good so it gets posted, Google likes it and people like it. But at the same time you don't want to target any keywords that you are aiming for as you don't want your guest post to be competing with you for the same rankings.

Am I over thinking this (pre-coffee o_O) or is there thought that people normally put into what they're going to put into a guest post?

Just try something in-between. Nothing too closely related, nothing too far fetched.

Tip: Try an app like Buzzsumo for gathering intelligence and discover some great ideas on what to write about. You could also give Ahrefs' content explorer a try as well (I use both) :)

Try to keep your guest post closely related to your niche. That way, you will not only write it more easily but will also increase your authority on the subject. Before you pick the topic, analyze the audience of the website that will publish the post, and adapt the topic to suit them and their needs. Chances are that this audience is at least slightly different from your own, so your guest post won’t be the competition.

It's a little difficult, but I am specific with who I choose for guest posts. If they sit in the same niche as you, I would want them not to be in the same sub-niche. For example - if I have a SaaS client I will often do blog post swaps with similar organizations. Maybe they make an email marketing eCommerce plugin, I may try and find other eCommerce plugin companies, but not ones related to email. OR I would aim for Startup, Technology, or business blogs like Forbes. If they rank ahead of you it will only work to your advantage as it will send traffic to you. Basically, don't choose your direct competitors to do guest posts with and you should be fine.
