Choosing a YouTube topic is so difficult

I’d consider returning to travel and food if that content was sustainable for you. A niche change can hurt engagement but consistency matters more if the new topic is exhausting.

Your health should come first. If the new topic is making the work too stressful, choose a topic you can create regularly without exhausting yourself.

I would go back toward travel or food niche specially if the new topic is exhausting you. Your audience was focused towards the old content and youtube recommends a gradual pivot when changing tpics.

With 200K subscribers I’d test a return to travel food before fully committing to the new niche The audience already proved they enjoy that content and if the new topic is affecting your health thats another strong reason to reconsider

Hopefully, the followers I had when I was still running my travel blog haven't left yet.

You should return to your original topic, as your current followers are interested in food and travel; if you plan to adjust your content or target a different audience, it would be better to start a new channel rather than using the existing one.

I'm so lucky that the number of followers I had from the beginning has stayed with me until now.

You should focus on the new niche so that your audience can enjoy your content or else they will leave your page and your viewership will gradually slow down so it is important to make videos on new niche or content.

My YouTube channel with 200,000 subscribers is experiencing decreased engagement after switching from travel & food content to searching for missing relatives. The search is currently too exhausting and affecting my health. Should I return to my old topic or continue in this new direction?
Return to your old topic. That's the reason that you have low engagement. The algorithm is trying to find the balance on your channel.

It's so obivious, you already have audience for travel and food content and they don't watch videos on other topic.. so the engagement dropped. Don't evrer combine two different niche content in a single channel. If the channel already have some audience. You will not only loose engagement but hurting your brand also. try different channel for different niche contents.

You could combine both searching for relatives and filming a blog at that location. But edit the two clips separately.

Changing the niche can affect the channel. If you wanna do something different then try it out on a new channel.
At that time, I was too focused on traffic and forgot about the possibility of creating a new channel with different content. As a result, I'm now stuck between conflicting thoughts.

I’m going to start making travel and food vlogs again. I hope viewership remains steady after the time I spent focusing on other topics.

I was too hasty in thinking that the new topic would explode in popularity and potentially last a long time, forgetting that the initial follower count for me was a different topic.

Yeah, choosing a topic can be harder than actually making the videos. I’d probably start with something I already enjoy and then check if there’s enough demand for it.

if you just start uploading travel vlogs again out of nowhere the algorithm is going to struggle because your recent upload history is all over the place. id probably private those missing person videos first to clean up the channel metadata. then maybe post a short community update explaining you are heading back to travel. it warms up the old subs who probably muted you and tells the algo what to expect. just dont delete the videos outright, privating them is safer so you dont lose the channel authority.

I’d test the old travel & food content again before making a full switch. Your 200K subscribers came for that content, and if the new direction is affecting your health, it may not be worth forcing. Your health should come first

I’d return to travel/food, or at least test a gradual shift back. With 200k subs, the engagement drop is likely because the new topic doesn’t match why most people subscribed.

More importantly, if the new format is exhausting you, it probably isn’t sustainable long term.

You made a big mistake by switching to the topic of finding missing persons; travel and food are the trending topics right now.

Your audience subscribed for travel and food, so a sudden change can affect engagement. Try slowly mixing both topics first.

Why don't you start a new channel? In this way your old channel will be unaffected.
