Choosing a proper Domain Name

Hi Guys,

When choosing a domain name, are there any things that you need to avoid such as dashes ?
ie if adding the word "sex" "playmate" or "porn" in the domain name, would it disadvantage it somehow on the SERP results ?

What are your thoughts ?

IMO your question is very very broad. Here are some questions you should answer first.
1) What niche are you going after?
2) What is your intention for the site?
3) How competitive is the niche?
4) What are your long and short term goals for the site?

Answering the questions above would provide deeper insight to accurately answer your initial question.

My question was related to general rules.
Using such keywords in the name would have any effect on the SERPs later on ?
 
Solidtactics wasn't wrong in asking/answering your question. Why would you use sexual terms in any corporate or other niche except an adult or porn site? These would help you rank better in that niche and would slap if used in other niches for being irrelevant.
 
I agree with CillingBreeze... if you are planning a website related to the porn / adult niche... suche keywords will surely help you... but if you are planning to make a website about restaurant, you will probably risk to be banned or penalized (even if the word is part of the restaurant name).

I had some personal experience with a domain name related to medicine (it was for a preparation course to enter to some very popular medical universities)... and for a long time I've been penalized and banned because "could be very far related" to other staff like viagra... etc... At the end, the website is ranking fine... as it should be.
 
I think inclusion of words such as porn and related may cause you not to appear in the SERPs.
 
My niche is chicago escorts

What I was thinking is chicagoplaymates or chicagoplaymateescorts

The first one does not have the keyword "Escorts" in it, so i'm doubting myself here. And also is the word "Playmates" would get me penalized in the SERPs ?

The second one is 22 characters which is above the 20 recommended

What are your thoughts again ? :S
 
Try to only have up to 2 dashes in the domain. Try not to make it look like keyword stuffing. Either focus on branding with the business name, or put your best keyword in there, but make it natural looking. No specific word will bring negative attention, unless it is offended searchers that are in a wrong area. Most will be looking for those keywords obviously. The best looking would be Chicago playmates, but it only has 1 keyword. I would look around at some other keyword options that get decent searches but its not so stuffed or direct. Actually if just like Chicago-Escorts.whatever is free, just go with that if that's the best keyword for searching.

Chicago-Escorts.whatever none are available...that is why I was going with playmates to make it look different a bit.

dashes are ok, i have sites with dashes that work a lot better than those without, it depends on the competitiveness of the niche mostly. also try to avoid .info sites, i think they're a lot crappier than the rest.
