Start looking at sites like google trends, ebay pulse and lycos top 50 for things that are hot right now (as a starting point) and then think of things you can promote to capitalize on it. Watch the news also....and keep an eye on what kind of spam is hitting your inbox on a daily basis. Then you can start making sites about various things and from there, you will be able to tell where to focus future efforts.

micronichefinder can give you a clue on what topics are currently hot and find a micro niche that you can dominate.
Since all people been using the tool, not sure you can easily find a niche that you can dominate though.

my personal favorites are mentioned above. Ebay pulse, youtube, and google Hot trends. I have been using google Hot Trends for more up to the minute trends when creating quick articles to get ranked quickly. Plus hot trends is good for ppc keyword ideas if you can move quickly enough.

    1) What do you know about - past work, hobby - is there a niche online that you can dominate and apply your knowledge to?

    2) Leech off the recession - check the news for who's going into administration - are their web assets up for grabs - at the least can you steal their brand traffic from PPC and direct the traffic to their competitors who still have aff deals going on?

You can also use spyfu.com. It shows cost/click for domains and keywords. If the cost per click is $1.00 or more than it should be a profitable market or niche (this doesn't mean I'm telling you to pay $1 per click). Worry about finding long tail keywords with good search volume to dominate. You don't have to dominate the niche itself to make money.

let me ask also right now as far as long tail keywords, i am looking for those that have a search volume of >100, exact phrase comp <30000-50000, and with >$1+ cpc... is this a good enough criteria i need to search for...

This is a good time to go into "tribal" niches where the "herd' hangs out because those niches will never disappear, even in a recession. The biggies include weight loss, dating, making money, sex, etc. Within all of those if you drill down enough with your keywords and you do some brainstorming you'll still be able to find entry points - sometimes a combination of unexploited keyphrases, sometimes a product name or product type. I say stick with these larger trends if you want steady income in this economy - but drill down to find an entry point that you can dominate.
