My guess is that rig is actually for stress testing new phones that are coming out. If not, it's a bit harder to detect fake installs from a real phone than it is using software as the only similarity would be the IP (and that can be proxied).

You can achieve the same with software, but you have to decompile / decrypt the app to figure out the authorization code, extract the private key, then MITM the network communications to see how to build the requests. All of which can be very complicated and time consuming and is required on a per app basis. Then when a new update comes out you have to do it again.

whereas with a phone rig like this, you can just remotely control all the phones. No decompling, no decrypting, no stepping through assembler style code, no bashing your head against the wall at 2am in the morning trying to spot what is wrong with your headers against the app headers and figure out why your code is not working

I don't know exactly. But you can get mobile control software, that allows you to remotely control the phones for testing. Just like you can control your phone via the laptop when you connect it in debugging mode.

To be completely honest, I wouldn't be surprised if a company of this caliber had their own app to handle the remote control.

Unrelated note, @rootjazz, Tumbling Jazz is great.

With simple command lines you can automate android from pc. The following command would click on x,y coordinates of the screen:

adb shell input tap x y

    The following to type text:

    adb shell input text "bhw"

Sure you can, you simply need to specific which phone you want to control. But I don't know how they are automating them, I just have an idea of how they do it.

My gosh!!! That must cost a HELLUVA LOT OF MONEY to build and operate. And i would kind of think too software would be a million times more cost effective. If i am not mistaken i believe MP simulates a mobile phone for instagram so having the software simulate a phone i would think wouldnt be a problem but then what do i know im not that techy most i know is html/css and no php or javascript whatsoever :)
