China is taking the piss

I do respect China, its culture, the people and so on, but I think its going in a very weird direction.

Having the "great firewall" and blocking Facebook, YouTube etc. even Tinder is no news, but now removing Mastercard, Visa, don't let foreigner use Wechatpay or Alipay probably?

You see in what direction it is going? Not in a good one, not an open one.

And right now I came across something super crazy. I checked into a Airbnb and the only way I can open the apartment door is by uploading my passport picture into a third party app and everytime I want to open the door I need to scan a QR code and take a picture of my face. Wtf?! So basically this 3rd party company now got all my data (passport, face recognition etc.), they exactly know when I am inside the apartment and so on. This is absolutely crazy

The thing is most Chinese people are okay with it. Data shows that they prefer safety over privacy ("If you don't have anything to hide...," they say). Systems like the social credit score, which are completely dystopian, are actually embraced. From what I've read it all comes from generations of inequality. The feeling of "I have to do whatever it takes to come out ahead" has led to people being suspicious of each other. Since the social credit system was built to "enhance trust", they don't actually mind not being able to fly or travel by high-speed train if they aren't exemplary citizens (or what the CCP understands as an exemplary citizen).

If in some areas of China you actually get punished (as in you get a lower social credit score) if you play too much videogames, or buy things that the government considers "superfluous". The funny part is that in some places where the social credit score is in place, the system is actually subcontracted to Alibaba (although it has more to do with credit information and whatnot).

If its citizens are under such surveillance (not to speak about the millions of cameras, but not like that doesn't happen in cities like London), it seems like no surprise that foreigners are as well.

Despite everything, it's actually a fascinating case. I just hope it doesn't come to the west any time soon.

Seems like their "firewall" got a major upgrade just today. Got several emails from VPN provider saying this. Right now I can't connect to any VPN. Things are getting worse unfortunately.

So I am back in China since three days. Next month is the Canton Fair and I am here to prepare for it, visit some factories and finally go to the fair. Maybe also some travelling.

Now here is the thing and the reason of this title. They seriously removed Mastercard and Visa from most of the payments. I went to Adidas, Nike, Zara and some other foreign shops, can’t pay by Mastercard or Visa anymore. I checked their chinese online shops, also can’t pay with them. So basically a foreigner NEEDS Unionpay or a chinese bank account, Wechat pay or Alipay.

Next thing, which now completely freak me out and which is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable in my opinion: It seems they are blocking/restricting foreign devices from having a good internet connection. Sounds weird? I brought my Playstation 4, iPhone and Macbook (all bought in Germany). The Wifi connection (china telecom) is extremely bad. By that I mean its not stable at all. One moment 10mbs another moment 50kbs download speed. Basically its useless. Here is the thing: Chinese friends who sit next to me, use an iphone and macbook (bought in China) are having 60mbs download speed. We even test it at the same time, same app (speedtest). The difference is huge. How is this even possible? My devices are not broken or anything like this. Never had any problem in another country as well. I even called a guy from china telecom and he said its all alright, its the problem of my devices....lol.

Wtf is going on

Is the payment restrictions just for factories or for any type of business you went to?

Well, that's what you get in a totalitarian dictatorship.

So you guys need a professional Chinese if you want to business
Yes we are ok with the security check, most Chinese are bad English and don’t know the word outside China.
There is still a popular joke about the US gunshots everyday on the Chinese internet ,most of Chinese think its safe.
When I were young, I think western freedom is important, but nowadays I begin think stable and safe is much important than freedom.l believe most of Chinese have the same thoughts especially they see the HK activities.
For me ,the biggest problem is really hard to botting in the Instagram and Twitter since I cannot connected them
I have large number of people work me,most of them have no social media accounts.what surprised me that is someone even never heard YouTube, don’t know what’s that, and all of them are young colleges.
So if I want to hire them , I must teach them how to use vpn, once a person told me he will never use vpn because it’s illegal. And I begin think how to make money on these stupid guys, really stupid, bad English and know nothing

Wait, so how it works this thing withwith unionpay, I mean, really, how can it work without mastercard or visa if im foreigner

Mostly its not about the factories. The best way to pay the factories is indeed to use Alipay, since they got something like a Buyer Protection.

I am talking about shops like Adidas, Nike, H&M, Uniqlo, Zara and other shops, which have branches worldwide. I tried to order something on their website and couldn't pay. No mastercard, no visa, no PayPal etc. then I went to the stores myself and couldn't pay with Mastercard or Visa. Only way was to go to an international ATM, withdraw some money and pay by cash...and just for the notice: A few months ago and also before I could use Mastercard etc. in these kinda stores.

Something else: I have a friend working in a 5 star hotel here in China. He told me they had to shutdown their VPN (some hotels have VPNs for their foreign guests) and its because of the 7th October. I think its national day in China or something like this. Therefore the government requested the hotels etc. to turn off the VPNs saying they want to restrict foreign websites till then.

The Chinese sour on Apple

Apple's reputation in China is suffering from the trade war with the U.S. The tech giant sank from No. 11 to No. 24 in an annual survey of China's top brands, while local competitor Huawei climbed two spots to No. 2.

Experts say the trade war and Trump's ban on Huawei have fueled a resurgence in nationalistic buying among Chinese consumers, with atrophy in Apple's second-largest market signaling a larger shift away from U.S. products.

@nakamura

Just chinese Governament know how to allow their country grow very fast.
They don't allow you for an example hosting your site on chinese server without ICP license.

And you can't get mentioned license if your company don't have JV with chinese company.
And you can't create fake JV, because chinese company must have at least 51% in this JV.

And if you not will host your site on chinese server, it will be very very slow and as the result - not popular.
Also can be switched down at any moment at chinese great firewall ( without any reason in theory )

For next example, new chinese companies pay 0% tax,
where in Poland (which is EU member) you pay monthly at least $300 for self employed, and don't matter you even no earn single cent.

And many many other rules, allow China to grow very very fast.
And YES, for foreigners from WEST, it can look as stupid, but in reality it's more clever than everywhere else.

And NO, I am not chinese person and I am not live in China.
But I am doing business with China.
And I am understanding goal of this clever rules.

Cheers, Greg.

Haha I love this. The thing, is, though, that you meant to say you prefer 'stable and safe with a little freedom' than freedom without stability and safety.

Stable and safe isn't shit without freedom, though. And yaa, right now there's a little freedom, but the catch is:

SHITS LIKE THIS NEVER STOP

ONCE YOU GIVE THEM A LITTLE FREEDOM, THEY TAKE ALL!!!

The party won't stop until they control every efin aspect of y'all lives and in the end that little freedom you exchanged for 'stable and safe' will keep deteriorating until there's none left, and let me tell ya, "stable and safe" won't mean shit then.

You should read Aldous Huxyley's Brave New World and George Orwell's 1984 - if they let you, of course.

Exactly this.

The biggest problem is chinese people don't seem to have ANY consciousness about it. They don't know that every single aspect of their life can be traced. Who they meet, what they buy, where they are, how they spend their day, where they plan to go, who they are eating with etc. EVERYTHING. This has NOTHING to do with "stable and safe". The people simply don't know about it. I spoke about it with a few chinese people like what they are thinking about all their meta data is being collected and they were like "what are u talking about?"

then today I called the women who rent the Airbnb. I asked her why I have to upload my passport, scan my face etc. to some weird company...JUST to open the apartment door..wtf. And guess what she said? "Its for security" then I said "look, the people (whoever controls this app or company) now have all my passport data, they know when i am inside the apartment, they know when i leave, when i come back, everything" and this women didn't have any clue what I am talking about.

I just think the people don't know. Its like 1933 in Germany, people just let shit happen...wait a few years and see how it goes....they will get completely fucked.

Macau is a gambling city and is much different than mainland china so it's all good

In regards to the payment it's for established brands and stores but most factories still do accept paymrnt through btc and open up an intl alipay account then you can use your card it's mainly for foreigners.

Damn, this thread gives me the creeps. Passport for door open? Wow! Reminds me of Orwell's 1984
