White plays first, shooting upwards and it has to get checkmate in 2 moves (black obviously makes a move inbetween).

Rook e3 (white), (black) bishop goes to e4, (white) rook takes bishop (e4), (black) rook takes rook (e4), (white) queen goes to d5 and its a check-mate
cant figure out how we can checkmate in 2 though unless black messes up the game by moving rook to e4

There aren't any forcing moves to make this happen automatically in 2 moves unless your opponent allows it.
Move 1 must be rook to e3.
Black has the in-between move of bishop e4 with check which you'd have to take back with
Move 2 rook e4
Then depending on what black chooses to take with or if they move the king to the only available square you can checkmate with either the queen or the bishop.
Jesse - rook d5 loses the rook to blacks white square bishop

Meerakat and andyrilflamewest - other variations include:
Knight takes e4 followed by
Move 3: bishop f4
AND
King to d6 followed by
Move 3: Queen d7
That seems like all the possibilities.
But yea, this could make someone go mad if they're led to believe it can be done in just two moves.

No it can't. That would leave the king open to be taken by the white bishop. I agree with the above solution

Forget my earlier post! I can see a move for the king out of the way. How about this?
Knight to C4
Rook takes Knight on C4
Bishop to F4
and I think all the King's options are covered

I've just changed my solution above (this is fun this, eh?) but I still think your bishop move would leave king open. Check out my solution above and let me know what you think

When I say 2 moves, I of course mean 2 White moves.
So White - Black - White. 2 White moves, 3 in total.

The Rook just moves right and takes Bishop.
