Checking security on a shared hosting server

Hi,

I am in the process of testing different hosting shared servers and I am very concerned about the security of the server. Thats why I would like to ask for advice on how to do to determine whether a server is secure or not so I can choose the better option. I have only cpanel access and ssh. A free online tool would be good too.
