Checking Over Optimization ?

Well , I have a simple question.
How do I check the over optimization of keywords on my site posts ?
My keyword Density is like 3%.

3% is way too much. Reduce it to 1% and add LSI keywords to your posts so that they can capture more long-tail traffic.
 
I always compare my keyword density with my top 10 competition.

This may not be the best approach. Those sites may have some high quality links or may be on high authority domains that is helping them rank despite their keyword density. Unless you can match / beat them on those factors you are calculating your keyword density incorrectly.
 
Use plugins to help you check your keyword density. Some niches can rank with high density whereas others with low.
 
Make sure you take into consideration all the parts of your website like feature posts, meta description, title, related posts and so on. The bots won't just look at your article they will look at the full page. I'm using SEOQuake to check that and try to keep it between 1%-1.5% just to be safe for the long run.
 
I always keep my keyword density below 1% maybe a tiny bit over. But as IceHD says, make sure to look at everything not just your article and title, meta tags come into play. I also use SEOQuake a great tool!
 
use free tool such as SEO Quake plus better keep density less than 3% and do note 2% is still fine.
 
Depends on your genre. If they write long articles in your genre density should be low. If they are short articles, density automatically not too good. Remember also duplicate content in the sense that when you create home page, categories and articles, each page or post should show different information. For example home page has only links to your posts, category pages have short descriptions and links, and the posts itself of course have all the information. If you have your keyword in the title and its a long one, you can still cut the urls shorter so it looks cleaner. Design the post url name with regard to other factors in the url name.

These are the things ive noticed now in the beginning.

Check the over optimization is not only in content, hence we want to check all the strategies like meta tags (keyword stuffing), inside the content (keyword density) and also backlinks. we should satisfy all these requirements.
According to my opinion keyword density is 1 to 2% of the whole article. instead of our keyword we can use generic keywords and LSI keywords.
For eg, target you synonym keyword. ie., Cheap hotels / Budget hotels similar to this. we want to use these type of keyword and place contextual links.
 
Also keep in mind over optimization is relative. So if your backlinks (offsite) have an abnormally high anchor text % for one keyword AND your onsite is obviously optimized for that keyword, it will set of flags. If your onpage is highly optimized but you have ZERO exact match anchors pointing to your site, it's not as dangerous. The key is finding the right mix. And with all the updates targeting over-optimization, LESS IS MORE.

You are right indeed. I didn't mention that it's good to compare sites with relatively similar metrics.
