I just want to know what everyone does to collect competitors information on their SEO strategies, and how to create my own strategy based on the information collected. Still pretty new to all this and just trying to be the best I can be for the company I'm with.

1. So what tools and strategies do you use to collect information?

2. What information do you collect?

3. What can I improve and how do I improve my site with the knowledge gained?

Thank you in advance for anyone who replies and I look forward to chatting about it.

1. Ahrefs, SEMRush

2. Ranking keywords, Low comp. kwds. Backlinks sources.

3. Optimize content, Internal linking, Building relevant backlinks.

Strategies will vary from site to site.

I appreciate the quick response. I am currently using SEMrush and Ahrefs is something I have been considering asking for. How does internal linking work in with the information gathered from competitors? By looking at what they are internally linking to?

First see what type of content they how, how long there articles, what type of content structure they use, like images, videos, Q&A etc.

then 2nd you have to check there backlinks/anchors, for that you can use ahrefs or semrush.

Interlinking will give good result only when you have authority website or ranking for some keywords,
then you can use those ranked pages to boost other pages.

but it seems that you are just starting, so other then interlinking, you have to get some external boost.

For the first part, there are no tools required and that is why it is good for people on budget.

Pretty much this!

You can basically sum it up into three components...Keywords, content, and backlinks.

See these are the things I have been working on the most. It's been 6 months and although there has been improvement, I am not seeing the needle move as quickly as I would like. Maybe I am over thinking it somewhere along the way.

The best way to collect information is to check your competitor's website yourself without any tools.
What I do is check their article topics and how they do internal linking. I also check their content and the structure of the website, the layout, and the call to action.
Then I check their backlinks on MOZ, Semrush etc. just to have a look if it has got some good natural links.

Expensive but if it's important you can audit on Surfer SEO.

I personally recommends to use Google. Collect their indexed backlinks from Google by simply put their website in the double quotes. branded backlinks will be shown from this.

Then we use ahrefs and SEMRush (paid options are better) with this we will scrap their 75% of backlinks.
Filter the good ones.

High authority less spam score backlinks

Try to replicate the same.

With SEMRush we can identify the website has working with the paid traffic. and can analyze the top ranking keywords your competitors has.

i have made an excel sheet. Primary data set that I capture in each column
title, and number of times the keyword is mentioned
description and number of times the keyword is mentioned
how many times the keyword is mentioned in each H tag, image description,
number of words and keyword density

for rows, I have key competitors. I could have a competitor mentioned multiple times in the rows. each row corresponding with different dates. I want to understand what changes they have made.

Ahrefs and Semrush Tool will be the best tool for competitor research

You have to research the backlink profile, Keyword research primarily after that you have to work your own work for the Keyword work.
You have to list out the keywords with prior search volume, Keyword difficulty also if you choose the keyword it will be an Exact match kws, Long tail Kws

And build niche links and some Traffic links to those keywords will be an effective method to improve your site performance

1. I use Ahrefs and semrush.
2. Collecting information like competitors' keywords, backlink profile, content..
3. Strategies like building links, site optimization, developing good content can be planned according to the information collected.

Aherf and SEMrush tools for getting history of traffic and back links added ,doing keyword research getting all kind of keywords that extracted and shortlisted based on search volume. You can start with keywords create articles that gets more organic results and back links that improve better traffic.

There are many tools are available in the online for checking your competitors site. Ahref and SEMrush are best tols to get more detailed information.

Collect the details of your competitors like keyword, backlinks, where the links are come from, content quality, region they focus, visitors are they getting etc..

Just compare those details with your site information. try to fix the issue got from that first.

Now you focus the on page, content quality of your site, Backlinks, Niche relevancy etc.

I remember the same question asked by my client a couple of years ago.

I said that just use the Google Search engine to get the competitor sites easy and for free.

There you can find the competitive site with the exact or nearly match keywords that you are targeting in your site.

Simply sort out the list of sites and gather information manually.

Of course yes, it will take much more time than using the tools.

But I suggest that you should take more time on it.

For backlink analysis, you can use SEMRush and Ahrefs tools.

Everything depends on the content you have. So be strong in it.

This can easily be done using most paid SEO tools like Semrush or Ahrefs.

When reverse engineering my competitors, I pay close attention to the following: I look at their organic keywords, and how hard it is to rank for such keywords.

I also pay attention to the monthly search volume of their "easier" keywords.

Once I have this information, I have everything I need to come up with a site that can rank against my competitor.

How do I do this?

Well, first I filter the low difficulty keywords based on search intent.

This is crucial.

You have to have a clear idea as to what kind of information or experience people are looking for when they type in these keywords into Google instead of another set of keywords.

Please understand that there are many different ways to search for the same thing online.

You have to wrap your head around this central question: Why are these people using this particular set of keywords instead of another?

Once you get the answer to that, then you should have everything you need to come up with a better site.

Of course, it helps if you use tools like Frase or Surfer SEO to optimize your content based on what your competitors are doing.

It's very easy to think that you're optimizing your content based on your understanding of SEO, but I would rather optimize content based on what my competitors are doing.

Remember, the search engine rankings is essentially a race.

Google isn't going to give you an automatic number one ranking just you dotted your i's and cross your t's.

They rank web pages based on comparisons so if you don't optimize your content with a firm basis based primarily on what your competitors are doing, you're just basically taking shots in the dark.

In most cases, you're putting in way too much time and resources when you don't have to.
