Checking competition for building micro niche site

Is it so difficult to outrank sites like webmd, yahoo answers, about etc for some long tail keywords like bad breath in dogs (just an example) and other keywords like that? These sites appears in almost every search for long tail keywords (2.000+ searches) and i wonder what is your experience about outranking that sites?

My experience that it is not easy to compete with those sites but possible.
You have to balance good backlinking profile with good content that attract users.

It is actually easy to rank for keywords (especially Long Tail) if you see sites like Yahoo Answers coming up on first page. Just a bit of SEO & you should outrank them.

The fact that yahoo answers and sites like this are ranked high usually means that the search term is not viable as a site. i.e wont make much money as somebody would have already done it, or it's not that easy to out rank them after all!!!

Check page 2 and 3 to see if there are other sites going after the keywords!!

Don't play with fire, build a balanced amount of backlinks and try to target extremely high quality articles for content marketing.

Backlinks - Relevant niches
Article Directories - Unique and Readable

What ?!
Yahoo Answers on first page means actually that the keywords are really easy to rank!
Sometimes just with good on-page SEO.

And you don't need 20-45$ 500-word articles lol if you are building a micro niche site.
5$ ones from good writers are enough.
Oh and don't bother with article directories, those are a thing of the past, in such weak niches just set up 5-10 web 2.0 and you are good to go with ranking!

I really need to question this content marketing tactic. It really seems like a bunch of google propaganda to me, to be honest. What is the point of making great and informative articles? So people will share them and create the most natural possible backlinks for you? They're not going to ever find and read these amazing articles if you're not ranking pretty well on google, because only a minority follows any other link than the top 3 links. And if you even get into top 5 by backlinking yourself, it must mean that you're a doing something very right, so why not just keep doing this until #1? Of course you could attract potential link creators by posting on social media sites, but how many people are really going to be interested in a long tail keyword which only gets 2k searches/month?

My experience says when you have Yahoo answer in first page then that KW might be easy to rank for, as nobody on this planet goes and build links to yahoo answers. They are only ranking with the help of domain authority.

Talking about WEBMD -
This is a pretty tough competitor and can be found almost in every medical related KW. So be prepared for investing good amount of money on SEO

Do take efforts to see who has written the post for WEBMD, which is ranking for your targeted KW. If it is written by real doctor then it become more difficult to outrank them. (you can check the the degree of writer on webmd. It is just next to authors name)

Look if they got KW in URL, Title and description or not. Do not forget to check average backlinks they got.
